Question about 1996 Chevrolet Cavalier

Noise in rear when braking

My1996 Chevrolet Cavalier makes a pounding noise in the rear of the car when I hit the brakes. Feels and sounds like someone is kicking the rear bumper every time I apply the brakes going forward. I checked everything on the rear axel and can find nothing loose nor can I see where anything is shifting??? I just cant figure it out…

When braking the vehicle, the rear wheels lock up, causing the tires to skid, making a clunking noise in the rear. Brakes & drums appear to be in good shape. I always thought with ABS the brakes sould not lock at all.

Same problem here, knocking in rear passenger wheel when braking and moving forward only, inspected brake pads, and assemblies and saw no visible signs of anything wrong.

More then likely wheel bearings. Make sure you check rear wheel bearings too. Noise travels very easily in the Cavalier. I had rear wheel bearings bad but sounded like front ones.

Chirping sound coming from rear of car while driving

the first thing i would do is to check the rear brakes, make sure nothing is rubbing,if a spring broke inside this may cause your noise so start there first, good luck,

Rear end making noise like a muffler is bouncing off the pavement. This happens on and off. It feels like the brakes may be dragging but then it quits.

Sounds like the rear EMERGENCY brakes are binding or your ABS is kicking in.

The E brakes are inside the hub of the rear rotors. You have to separate the rear rotor from the axle hub as the E brakes work like drum brakes. The debris will set off the ABS and bind the rear wheels. Many brake shops and dealers just look at the calipers and pads and do not inspect the E brake.

Brake problem

It sounds like your rear brakes needs to be service. Your brake shoes are worn too thin or the retainer clips are broken holding your brake shoes in the right place. Good luck

How is the brake fluid level in the master cylinder? If it's low, the brake light will come on. The right rear wheel and drum need to be removed to inspect the brakes and see what is going on. Your description sounds like there may be some brake hardware floating around inside the drum. Let me know what u find. Curt

Rear end clunk in Chevrolet Silverado 1500 pickup

The noise is caused by the axle button being worn out, this lets the axle move back and forth and clunk, this is a unique problem with C clip retained axles, it is a noise issue but will not fail and cause any more damage, in order to fix it you must have the axles pulled and the diff carrier checked for excess wear where the axle retainning C clip rides, if the carrier is ok then replace the axles.
