Question about 2001 Acura MDX

MDX won't start on hot days

Twice this summer the car won't restart after being driven a short distance and left in the sun while doing errands. The interior of the car is black with a silver exterior. The first time I was able to get it start after a few minutes. The second time, this week, the car was towed in but started after it was taken off the tow truck. It is not the battery.

The car has been at a Honda/Acura repair shop since it was towed there two weeks ago. They say they cannot re-create the problems. I really don't want the car returned to me for fear of it happening again.

Overheating Aggravated by extreme summer temperatures, failure to keep coolant levels topped up, leaking coolant hoses and broken electric cooling fans can all result in overheating and temperatures fierce enough to cause severe and expensive damage.

Check the coolant reservoir level regularly (refer to the handbook if necessary) and look out for wet or white staining on coolant hoses. If the fan's broken it will soon become apparent when you meet slow moving traffic and the engine temperature starts to soar.

You can get a garage to check it or do it yourself by running the car to normal temperature and then allowing the engine to idle for five to 10 minutes - the cooling fan should cut in automatically.

Thanks for using Fixya

    • Loose Starter: Loose starter bolts will cause it to dance around and wiggle, failing to turn the engine over.

    • Bad Injectors: A bad injector can throw the whole fuel system off and keep the engine from firing, especially when the engine is warm.

    • Faulty Cold Start Valve: A failed cold start valve will keep your car from starting when the engine is cold. It can also malfunction and keep your car from starting when it's warm!

    • Chipped Flywheel or Ring Gear: Your starter's gear connects with the gear teeth on your flywheel or ring gear (depending on transmission type). If one of these teeth becomes worn or chipped, the starter will spin. You'll hear loud screeches, scrapes, squeals and grinding if this is the case.

    • Bad ECU or MAF If your engine's main computer or any part of the system's electronics go bad, your car won't start. Unfortunately you'll need to leave this type of diagnostic work to a qualified repair shop.

My son inherited a 1994 Mercury Sable with 12,000 miles that hasn't been driven since 2006 and sat outside in snow and sun. Repairs will cost $2,300. What are odds transmission won't work eith

Well anything is possible, but I would expect the transmission to work given the time and mileage.
Is there any way you could drive it a short distance before spending much money ?
I am assuming you are having the fuel tank drained and the cooling system flushed among other things.
I would change the fluids and try to drive it a few blocks before spending money on much else to see what it will need.

Our 2003 Saturn L200 turns over, but won't it's not getting gas. This just started happening and only after we've already driven it that day. The first time it happened was...

Check fuel pressure at the injector rail. If good, suspect crankshaft position sensor--when it fails to start, check for sparks by pulling an ignition wire off the coils and holding it close to the coil with an insulated tool while someone cranks the engine. If no sparks, replace the sensor.

No fuel when car is hot - won't start

I doubt it is the ECM, that doesn't really make any sense to me. I believe your fuel pump is the issue. What do you mean it isn't on under these conditions? When you do a long errand it start and is fine, right? It is heating up during your drive, then won't start up after your short errand. That's why I ask if a longer errand would be fine, and obviously in cold weather, this would be the same. A longer errand lets it cool down.

Does the engine crank and turn over easily when it is hot? If not, it could just be the battery, but I kind of doubt it. Also, you are using premium 92 octane gas right? That care needs it.

Lastly, if you give it some gas before you start and while you start it, you may get it started. I'd hit the pedal a few times before starting and definitely hit the gas when you start it.

It's not the ECM; I would be shocked.

Good luck!!
