Question about 2002 Mazda Protege
Yesterday my car began to loose power especially when I am taking off. It seems as if the car isnt getting enough fuel, or is starting in 2nd gear. (I filled up yesterday morning) The problem was not too bad and I nearly forgot about it. A few hours later I went for a drive and the car had no problems, after driving for 30 mins the problem came back and the car began doing the same thing. It also now does it when Im driving at higher speeds and feels like Its chugging and not getting enough fuel. The check engine light came on. It flashed and then stopped flashing and remained solid. I hardly made it up the hill near my house. The problem kept coming and going the way home. This morning I went for a test drive and the problem seems to have dissapeared again. What could this be?? Any suggestions would be VERY appreciated. Thank you.
I had the same problem with my 02 Protege 5. After new plugs, wires and a few hours of tinkering around, we found it to be a grounding problem with 1 of the coil packs. There are 2 coil packs on the motor. You can pick one up at Autozone for $30 and they very simple to change out! Good luck!

Rough idle or hesitation in the 02 protege can be caused by a stuck EGR valve or IAC controller. if theres hesitation or shudder when accelerating it may be a clutch release bearing problem that lets the clutch slip. there is a recall out for this problem. another cause could be that you are running the car too hard before warmup and this causes a similar shudder. if your problem goes away after the car warms up i would go with the latter.

This is the solution. In 2005 there was a repair recall for the Protege5. It was an faulty intake manifold shudder valve. Instead of a full replacement of the manifold, Mazda decided to just switch out the valve to save money. Your problem is a failure of this replaced valve. It was only under warranty for a year after replacement. You need to replace the intake manifold to correct this problem. $$$$ sorry and good luck.
