Power steering line is leaking fluid. its spraying on pulleys and causing belt to fall off

The pulley is loose,because shaft inside the p/s pump is bad needs replaced--falling off because of that-not fluid

How do I know if my Power steering unit(?) has to be replaced


no power steering fluid would cause the pump to overheat, damaging seals.
the foam might have been pump cavitation causing injestion of air in the fluid, (makes the hydro fluid "frothy")
spraying ANY lubricant on the belts will cause them to slip and make a squeaking/squealing noise.

check the location of the leak, wipe down the hoses (cheap causes for leaks) fill the power steering. put some newspapers under the car, start the car, turn the wheels lock to lock, shut off car, check for leaks, should tell you if it is a hose or connection, or rack unit

The tension belt keeps coming off of my 1999 Town and Country. First the power steering fluid starts to leak, then it overheats. Now the battery is dead. I have already repaired the tension belt before...


Hi,
I assume you mean you have replaced the serpentine drive belt before? When your belt comes off, it is not operating your water pump and alternator or power steering pump, giving you the overheat and dead battery. Shouldnt make power steering fluid leak though. Does the power steering fluid leak all the time, or just when the belt comes off? If it leaks all the time from the pump area, you could have a bad seal and bearing in the pump causing the pulley to wobble and that makes the belt walk off. First, locate the belt routing diagram on the engine cowl (front of vehicle under the hood) or make a drawing of how the belt is routed for re-assembly use. Loosen belt tension at tensioner and take belt loose from a pulley that is easily accessed. Use your hands to wiggle all your pulleys and feel for excessive play in any of them or the components themselves. (water pump, power steering pump,A/C compressor and alternator.) If component play, you could have loose bolts causing wobble. If pulley play, could be bad bearing in component which would need replaced. Pay special attention to excess movement in the tensioner pulley itself. Also visually check for sideways alignment of pulleys. If pulleys are not aligned correctly, it will make the belt walk off also. That is usually a bracket misaligned or bolt holes in bracket worn out. If all checks good, I would suspect a worn out belt or belt tensioner that is not holding enough / proper tesion on belt allowing it to walk off. It will take you about an hour to check these things, repair costs depend on what you discover as a potential problem,as components can be costly.

FIRST OF ALL TURN OFF RADIO REMOVE NEGATIVE BATTERY CABLE. THEN REMOVE POWER STEERING PUMP FLUID FROM POWER STEERING PUMP.USING A HAND PUMP SIPHON. BE CAREFUL DONT GET POWER STEERING FLUID ON CAR PAINT IT WILL DAMAGE PAINT JOB.PUT A DRAIN PAN UNDERNEATH CAR TO CATCH POWER STEERING FLUID THEN DISCONNECT POWER STEERING PUMP LINES.REMOVE POWER STEERING PUMP ADJUSTER BOLT AND MOUNTING BOLT.REMOVE POWER STEERING PUMP.MOST OF THE TIME NEW POWER STEERING PUMP DONT HAVE DRIVE PULLEY ON IT SO TAKE TO A MACHINE SHOP THE WILL REMOVE PULLEY FROM OLD PUMP AND PRESS ON THE PULLEY TO NEW POWER STEERING PUMP.BESURE TO BUY NEW O RINGS TO END OF PRESSURE LINE.ONCE NEW POWER STEERING PUMP HAS PULLEY IN PLACE AND YOU HAVE NEW O RING FOR HIGH PRESSURE LINE.INSTALL NEW PUMP.ADJUST BELT TENSION.NOW BLEED POWER STEERING PUMP WITH FRONT WHEELS POINT STRAIGHT A HEAD POSITION.POUR POWER STEERING FLUID IN PUMP UNTIL FLUID LEVEL ON COLD MARK ON POWER STEERING PUMP DIP STICK.KEEP ADDING FLUID UNTIL FLUID STOP DROPPING. START THE ENGINE LET IT RUN AT IDLE ADD MORE FLUID IF DROPS KEEP FLUID ON FULL COLD MARK.ON DIP STICK TURN OFF ENGINE.CHECK TO MAKE SURE POWER STEERING PUMP NOT LEAKING AT THE LINES THEN.SAFELY RAISE SUPPORT FRONT OF THE VECHICLE WITH JACK STANDS. MAKE SURE VECHICLE ON SOLID LEVEL GROUND CHECK.FLUID LEVEL MAKE SURE AT FULL COLD MARK. NOW START ENGINE.LET IDLE MINUTE.THEN TURN STEERING WHEEL ALL THE WAY TO THE LEFT TO RIGHT SEVERAL TIMES WITH OUT STOPPING IT IN PLACE. CHECK POWER STEERING FLUID WHEN FLUID LEVEL STOP DROPPING.AND FLUID IS NOT A TAN COLOR WHICH MEAN LOTS OF AIR IN SYSTEM. TURN OFF CAR UNTIL AIR BUBBLES DISAPPEAR.CHECK FLUID LEVEL BLEED POWER STEERING AGAIN. DONT DRIVE VECHICLE UNTIL STEERING FEEL NORMAL.IF FLUID REMAIN TAN WITH AIR BUBBLES CHECK FOR LEAKS AT POWER STEERING PUMP PRESSURE HOSE ORING. AND CHECK POWER STEERING LINES TO PUMP FOR LEAKS.

CHANGING POWER STEERING PUMP YOU HAVE TO PLACE A DRAIN PAN UNDER THE VECHICLE. SIPHON OUT POWER STEERING FLUID WITH A SIPHONER DONT USE YOUR MOUTH TO SIPHON SWALLOWING POWER STEERING FLUID CAN BE FATAL MAKE YOU SICK.WHEN ALL POWER STEERING FLUID IS REMOVED FROM POWER STEERING PUMP.REMOVE DRIVE BELT.THEN REMOVE THE POWER STEERING PUMP.THEN YOU HAVE TO REMOVE THE POWER STEERING PUMP PULLEY THE NEW POWER STEERING PUMP DONT HAVE A PULLEY YOU HAVE TO HAVE REMOVE PULLEY FROM THE OLD POWER STEERING PUMP.YOU NEED A PUMP PULLEY REMOVER AND A PULLEY INSTALLER.YOU CAN TAKE OLD POWER STEERING PUMP AND NEW POWER STEERING PUMP TO A MACHINE SHOP.THEY WILL REMOVE PULLEY OFF OLD PUMP PRESS IT ON NEW POWER STEERING PUMP.THAT WOULD BE CHEAPER THAN BUYING THE PULLER AND INSTALLER.GO TO AUTO PARTS STORE BUY NEW HIGH PRESSURE LINE O RING GOES TO PRESSURE LINE GOING INTO POWER STEERING PUMP.ONCE YOU GET NEW PUMP READY PULLEY BEEN PRESSED ON.TAKE POWER STEERING PUMP HOME PUT IT ON. BLEED POWER STEERING SYSTEM.WHAT YOU DO WHEN YOU GET NEW PUMP INSTALLED HIGH PRESSURE LINE IN PLACE.PUMP BOLTED IN DRIVE BELT ON POUR POWER STEERING FLUID IN POWER STEERING PUMP UNTIL FLUID LEVEL STOP DROPPING AND YOUR LEVEL ON POWER STEERING DIP STICK AT COLD LEVEL.NOW START CAR UP LET IT IDLE FOR 3 MINUTES.THEN TURN OFF ENGINE CHECK POWER STEERING FLUID IF FLUID LEVEL DROP ADD LITTLE MORE UNTIL LEVEL ON DIP STICK ON COLD MARK DONT OVER FILL.NOW SAFELY RAISE SUPPORT FRONT OF VECHICLE. No power steering and smoking from hood


[1]the power steering pump might have siezed up causing the belt to slip to burn on the pulley. [2]or the pump broke the shaft internally and some fluid is leaking out and hitting the exaust[3] a hose has sprung a leak and it is spaying oil on the exaust manifold

Power steering fluid leaking pretty good on 2005 chevy impala. not from pressure line ithink. any clues


The power steering pump is belt driven. It is on the engine where you put fluid in. There are two lines that run from the power steering pump to the power steering rack on the firewall. The fluid can leak from the pump, either of the lines or the rack itself. If you are handy you may be able to repair the problem by replacing the bad part. Wear safety glasses when looking for the leak and do not touch the fluid leak when the engine is running. The pressure is high enough to hurt you. If you ignore the problem you will eventually loose the power assist and may be unable to steer the car. Fix it now!








One line is high pressure and the other is a return line. Check them with the engine off and when you think you've found the leak staret the car and look for the leak. If it sprays like a water hose DO NOT TOUCH THE LEAK. The pressure is high enough to cause serious injury.

I got a 99 Chevy Malibu ..the problem is i just started noticing a noise or rattling coming from the top power steering pump pulley ,or tensioner pulley area and it is getting noisier, plus when i try to...


Check the Power steering fluid for it will be noisy if low. The tensioner works off a very strong spring so if your belt is on it was not the mechcanics fault unless he nicked a hole in the power steering line somewhere. Check for leaks as well

I have a 99 Hyundai Elantra and almost every time I turn the car on, it makes this awful squealing noise. The noise sounds to be coming from somewhere in the engine and is really bad when I have my wheel...


hi, the first thing i would have said the fault was was going to be a fan belt/ alternater belt if this is to loose or to tight then this can give you the noise you are hearing, one way of finding out if its a belt making the noise is to go out and get a spray like wd40 and then spray this on the belt then if the noise goes away you then know that its that belt causing you the problem.

If the belts have not been replaced recently then this could be the cause of your problem, spray the belt with a spray or even soapy water then give you car a try if your using soapy water make sure you get the whole belt wet then try the car if the noise is then gone you know the belt is at fault.

If you have power steering then low power steering fluid can cause the power steering pump to squeek so check the level and fill it up to the highest mark then start the car and turn the wheel fully left then fully right then back to the middle then check the level again.
Low steering fluid can cause the noise you hear.

If after doing this its not the belt making the noise and neither the power steering pump then the only thing left that could cause the noise you are having is a dry bearing on one of the pulleys now this could be the alternater pulley or power steering pulley basically any pulley that the belt is running on could be causing you the noise you hear.
To stop the noise you need to buy a spray oil or spray lube then give these pulleys a good spray all around where the bearing is in the middle if the bearing gets to dry it can sieze and cause you loads of problems so go and buy a spray lube and give all of the pulleys a good spray at the front and the back try and get it in towards where the bearing is in the middle this should then stop the noise that you are hearing.

you can spray wd40 on the pulleys but remember this isnt a oil or lube it will just stop the noise for a couple of minutes so you could tell witch pulley is causing you the problem your better of buying a proper spray lube and give all the pulleys a spray where the bearing is in the middle this should then solve any noises you hear.

Make sure you check the engine oil level to rule out the noise coming from the inner workings of the engine ok

Squeeling belt, have replaced idler pulley, squeels when idling and turning with a/c on. Could it be the power steering pump?


Try using a very small spray of silicone spray on the belt next time you're hearing the squeal. If it temporarily stops, replace the belt. Check the p/s fluid level, if it's low it could cause the pump to make noise. Also if it's low, you have a leak, check all lines, connections and pull back the bellows boots on the p/s rack (if rack and pinion). Finally, pick yourself up a mechanic's stethescope, good tool for diagnosing accesory noises. Listen to all components while duplicating the noise.
