i am having the same problem. it starts just fine, runs for about five min. then slowly starts decreasing in speed until it will not accelarate. but i turn it off, then on right after and it will run fine for another five min. i can do this repeatedly. it doesnt turn off it just wont accelarate. tried the gas cap and that didnt work. if you know what could be the problem please let me know.

    thanks

Gas caps that fail to vent can cause this same condition. Take the gas cap off and see if that helps.

Also clogged fuel filters will cause a similar problem.

Do you have to wait a while after it cuts off before you can start it again? If so, it is probably the crankshaft location sensor which is mounted on the bell housing @ the front of the transmission, driver side, up rather high, it can be reached from below, it has one plug in wire and I believe one or maybe 2 mounting bolts. What is a bad crank sensor. My 97 grand Cherokee might take 3 min to crank and may cut off in a few minutes while I'm driving it.

The crank sensor Is an input to the PCM. It is used to detetect RPM and may control spark and/or fuel. a bad crank sensor can manifest as prolonged cranking, stalling, not starting... It happens to be a pretty common issue with Jeeps in my professional experience.

Sounds like your fuel pump is going bad. Have your mechanic do a pressure test on it.

235k miles. cut off one time going down road, immediately restarted. a week later after cutting off would not restart in 8 long cranks. 5 mins later cranked. next morning after starting 2 different time...

I have seen crank sensors go and leave no codes, but, likely the fuel pump is going away...they get hot and seize, then cool down and work again. I would not replace either without proper testing only because parts are expensive and there are other heat sensitive components in there. (coil etc) Be aware that it will check out good if it is running right while tests are being done.

1993 Jeep Cherokee starts when cold. Runs short distance.

It can possibly be the crank position sensor mounted on the top of the bell housing on the passenger side of the vehicle causing the problem. I have replaced a few of these for the same reason.

Crank position sensors are a big problem in these vehicles. Scan the Jeeps computer and post any codes you come up with.
