Question about 1997 Geo Metro

1997 Geo Metro

Car starts, runs fine most of the time. But sometimes when warm, I shut it off and 5 mins or so later it will not start.
2 or more hours later it will start and run fine, sometimes for a few days before the cycle repeats.
Now when it wil not start I can hear the pump. Spark is good to the cap. No sign of fuel at the injector.

Have the same problem. Have replaced, fuel pump, ignition coil, resister and every ignition part we could find. It runs fine until you turn it off and let it set about 10 minutes and then it will not start again for a couple of hours. At that point it has fire but slow fire. Help. Have now spent $1000 trouble shooting and still have same problem.

When car is cold starts right up, after driving for short distances, few miles, won't start, have to wait an hour and then it will start. It turns over, but not getting gas, is it a fuel system problem? It...

I have the same problem. Started in 2001. I got lucky and pulled the fuel pump relay, then stuck it back in and it started. I replaced that relay and it worked fine for 7-8 years. Now I am experiencing the same problem. Another forum I read suggested during a cold start, the fuel pump works from the circuit breaker, but after the car is heated up, it works frm the oil pressure? (I didn't understand it) but it went on to say that as the car heats up, the oil thins down and the car won't start. It didn't mention a fix for this. Just try the relay. It's about $30. Maybe they just get weak?

1997 geo metro died while driving.

I had a similar problem with my 1987 ford escort. In this case I knew before hand what was going to happen. My water pump was going bad and loosened up the timing belt enough for belt to slip. Once that timing belt moves in position then things run bad and finally quit as mine did.

I am guessing this is the case for you also. I have changed out 3 timing belts on different escorts now, the first took about 2 days but the last took about 15 mins. The belt in my case only cost about 30 dollars.

Hope this helps

Some it starts

my 97 geo metro will not start when I turn the ignition key. The radio will work, buzzer etc. I can jump it with another car and it will start and run. If I turn ignition key to start, there is absolutely no crank, no click, no nothing. Could this be ignition module, bad battery, voltage regulator, starter?

When i start my 1997 Geo Metro, it often sputters

Try this
Here are the most common causes of surges, stalls at stops, low erratic idle speed, rough idle and engine hesitation, it is in most cases the idle speed control air-bypass valve and or throttle valve and upper intake, these area's get full of gunk and combustion residue over the miles and cause idle issues (stalls, low idle) like yours, Get a can of intake cleaner from any local parts store, not carb spray, intake cleaner, it is made by a company called CRC, remove the air intake hose to the engine, hold the idle high so the engine won't stall, then spray the can of cleaner into the intake while keeping the engine running, use at least 1/2 the can, shut down the engine and disconnect the battery for 5 minutes, then restart and complete a number of mixed driving cycles, town, freeway, stop and go etc., after a few days the problem will go away as the system will relearn to the clean intake.
