Question about 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee

1 Answer

Gauges turning off

I replaced the alternator and the battery which were both bad, and now it starts fine, but the windows don't go down, the gauges all turn off when the brakes are pushes, the gauges turn off then back on when the headlights are turned on, and the brake lights don't work. Any ideas.

thanks,
Joe

    Thanks for the help but nothing seemed to work. I'm just going to take it to me fiance's dad to check it out.

    It turned out to be a bad fuse box, so I replaced it and everything works.

Hi,

  1. I would seem that your electrical system needs a thorough look over. Suspect would be connectors (either corroded, loose or burned), fuses and relays. Specifically:
  2. windows don't go down - check the fuse, switch motor;
  3. the gauges all turn off when the brakes are pushes - check that the gauges IGN B+12 is not intermittent (loose connector from IGN switch);
  4. the gauges turn off then back on when the headlights are turned on - same probable cause (loose IGN B+12);
  5. the brake lights don't work - faulty brake switch, burned out bulbs, loose/no +12 sup[ply to switch.
Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards.

Thank you for using FixYa.

Bad battery or alternator. Jump it again and with it running, pull off the positive battery cable. If it dies, its a bad alternator. If it stays running, its a bad battery.

sounds like a regulator malfunction to me..need to connect a battery/alternator tester to the system and see if the regulator is bad.. this will cause full charge of the alternator to enter the system.. this uses the battery as a regulator and will cause overheating of wires and relays..if the alternator can be removed and tested separately(most can), do this and see if this is the case..replace if bad..good luck..

The car lost its gauges, power windows, rear brake lights and would not shift out of park. When they checked the alternator they said it was bad but the battery was good. Replaced the alternator,...

Check to make absolutely sure that the alternator is working, namely, turn on the lights, bright ones, turn on the radio, turn on the heater at full blast, etc, anything that draws power. If the engine badly bogs, or if it suddenly dies, you still have an alternator issue. Alternatively, might take it and have it tested.

I am having a voltage issue with my 2003 gmc 1500hd 6.0L. I replaced the battery last week and had the alternator checked this past weekend and it checked out fine. Problem: At idle speed the voltage drops...

No. It is a bad alternator. When they test the alternator they turn it at faster rpm. When it turns at faster rpm it is charging fine. What the problem is the voltage regulator in the alternator is going bad. When you turn your blinker on I bet the voltage shows on the gauge. Moves up and down with the blinker.

My 1999 isuzu rodeo wont start.

check all your connections to your alternator,starter and your battery But you you are hearing the starter "click" but not engage..try tapping on the starter with a hammer if it is easy to get to..this some and sometimes does work..but your starter solenoid can be bad..the starter can be bad..igntion module a number of possibilities..goto your local parts store or public library and purchase a repair manual or check one out at the library

Gauge shows battery not recharging

There could be a couple of causes,the most likely is a bad battery cable or connection, or the fusible link on the positive connection(marked bat on the alternator)has gone bad.

93 LX 5.0 replaced battery, ran fine then would not start

sounds like you have a good battery, get the car started put a voltmeter to wire connected to the back of your alternator. if you have at least 13.25 volts you have a good unit if any lower replace the alternator
the click sound you are hearing comes from your relay it is getting low voltage from the battery. because the battery has no juice caused by a bad alternator

hope to help shack
