I have a 2003 VW Beetle. I went to a gas station, didn't turn my car off or anything, got back in and the EPC light was on. So I had to get it towed because not even the mechanics at the gas station had any idea what the EPC light even was. I had to explain to them what it even meant. So now my car is sitting at a Firestone and I'm just hoping it's a stupid sensor thing they can fix. I had no idea so many people had my exact same problem considering mechanics have never even heard of it.

If you can't get it out of park and lights are not working, there is a recall for a faulty brake switch. Not sure if it applies to your car, but it sounds right. Give your VW dealer a call and ask them.

Make sure the brake lights are coming on if not the release solenoid that unlocks park gets no power and will not release the shifter from park position. Also check the owner's manual for a possible way to override the solenoid lock.

I have a 2003vw jetta the epc light is on and the will not come out of park nor the stop lights come on,I have already changed the brake switch and still won't work..

EPC light should have nothing to do with the shift interlock,(EPC is traction control) should be a small cap or plug on the console, near the shifter that has the interlock disengage button, usually done with a key, check shift interlock in the owners manual.

Started not shifting out of park only occasionally at first.then continually got worse. Now i can't get it out of park at all. once out of park shifts normally to other gear

You did not put vehicle y m m but normally all newer cars have a shift interlock solenoid that wont let you shift out of park unless you apply the brakes sounds like interlock solenoid failed. Its down low under the shifter and difficult to get to.

My gears won't shift. I can't get out of park. & My EPC light is on.. What should I do to make my car work?

the brake light switch located at the top of the brake pedal bar is not working any more. this also controls the shift lock solenoid. when depressed, the brake pedal allows one to move the shift lever from park to any gear of their choosing. had this problem vw sold me a new one for 5 bucks.

The EPC In my 02 bug is on and it wont shift out of park. whats going on?

Hello glitzandg252...This has been a problem for many VW owners.
Brake Light Switch Malfunction is the cause of it. In fact VW has issued a recall for the defective brake switch here's the info:

Recall 04V096000: Brake Light Switch Malfunction

DEFECT: The brake light switch on these vehicles may malfunction. If this happens, the brake lights could become inoperative, or come on and stay on, even though the vehicle is parked.

REMEDY: Dealers will replace these switches. The manufacturer has reported that owner notification is expected to begin during April 2004. Owners may contact Volkswagen at 1-800-822-8987.

Give them a call and see if your vehicle is included in the recall, you will need the VIN number.

In the mean time ...|VW Roadside Assistance has a technique that will get you by until you can get repairs done.... Here's the technique:

1. Turn off the ignition.
2. Press the brake pedal 5 times, and on the 5th, keep your foot on the brake and start the car.
3. Let it run 5 seconds, and turn it off.
4. With your foot still on the brake, turn the ignition key 1/4 forward
5. Shift to a position between N & D
6. Now start the car. Shift to D. It what you really want to do is back out, shift from D to R.

Good luck...i hope this helps. Please take time to rate my response a FIXYA...
