Question about 2001 GMC Yukon

2001 yukon got rid of the slt shocks front and back,they wanted almost 4,000 to replace all 4 and it needed the compressor,i put regular tahoe shocks in,any way off shutting of the services slt light on my dash? thanks Jeff

Ask the auto parts store guy to show you. My 2001 Tahoe is up under the Right side dash. Unscrew cover, filter is on edge.

I'm not sure how you know if your fuses are bad. How do I know? How do I know if its the ALC that is bad?


Fuses have a little u shape piece of metal between the posts. If a short occurs, the center u shape piece will be melted.However if the comp works fuse is probably ok. Possible the ride sensor on the rear end disconnected or damaged .if shop did the replacement take it back to them.if you did it you are going to have to retrace your steps to see if something got missed

How to install front shocks


Are they coil overs?

If so- you remove them & have a shop put them
into a spring compressor & swap out the shocks
or rent a small spring compressor

My 98 aurora rear shocks have nothing left. it bounces all over road can i put regular shocks on rear or do they make a self filler kit to bypass the compressor? whats the cheapest,but safe way to fix it?


You want the safest way, the filler kit will not work...You need to replace them and get your mechanic to check your front shocks as well because if the front ones are bad and you replace the back only, your car will look like a drag racing car and you will have extremely bad handling..

Have 2001 Tahoe. AC runs cold in front and warm in back. Repair shop says rear expansion valve plugged (metal shavings, etc.). Suggest replacing compressor. Intend to get rid of truck early next year...


no it will not fail but i suspect that you only need a recharge of gas as with two AC units you should have about 1.2 kilos of gas in this system and i think you only have about half that ?? could be wrong mind but i do think your being taken here to make up the wage bill for the month

What is the differnce of a Lt autoride and a Lt


the lt autoride has self adjusting shocks, and the regular lt doesn't. if you look the autoride has airlines going to the shocks.

My 2001 yukon denali is saying serevice ride control what does that mean?


Seems like a common problem with these trucks. I thought I was the only one. I just posted this comment for someone who has a 2003.....I'm not an expert and not sure how widespread the warning message can be, but in my personal case: I have a 2001 Yukon Denali.....I have the same problem and have for many months. I took it in a few times and the GMC Dealership finally told me that It's the ride air bags. In my case they are leaking. Its not the same safety airbags in the front dash to prevent injury...but these models have air bags under the truck that automatically adjust to level when weight shift...you might hear the occasional sound coming from the back while driving or when more people are in your Denali. To me it sounds like a power tool. The Service tech told me it's not harful nor will it damage anything, but it costs about $2000 to fix, because they have to replace the whole thing. He said you may notice the sound coming on from the airbags more often because of this..because the system is working harder to adjust the weight due to the leak/loss in air. So occasionally for about a year...the light comes on....but it has done nothing else.

shocks??theres a bolt on top and on bottom of the strut called the shock mount bolt remove theme and the shock will come right out.to put new ones mount the top first its easier to push up on the shock to replace the bottom bolt

My autoride suspension is not working


A ton of things could be wrong with your autoride system. If you have more than about 70k miles and haven't replaced the rear shocks ($500+ EACH!!! at the dealer), then they are probably leaking out. If they leak out, then the air compressor will always run. Eventually the air compressor/ride level sensor module (located on the driver side rear wheel on the inboard side of the frame, $300+ at the dealer) burns out because it's not designed to run at 100% duty cycles. After the air compressor burns out, the Electronic Stability Control module (in an XL, located inside the passenger side rear wheelwell trim, next to the third row seat, $300+ at the dealer) will probably short out. If your autoride isn't working and you don't get a "Service Stability" message, your ESC module is probably going bad.

It is possible to convert to regular shocks, but to keep the Stability Control (still has to control your brakes and front variable dampening shocks during "evasive" maneuvers), you have to insert some 1/4 watt resistors in to the ride height sensor connectors (can't remember what values, but I'm sure you can Google that) so that the Stability system doesn't throw a code. Not that it matters, but the message can get annoying if it's always there to nag...

My dealer quoted over $2500 to replace the entire system. I figure I can find the control modules from my local junkyard for $300, and the shocks from ebay for $350 for the pair. Be sure to match all of the GM part numbers, and keep an eye out for an upgraded Air Compressor module - GM released an update that is heavier duty and more water-resistant than the first design. I don't remember the part number, but my dealer included the upgrade with my quote.

Oh, and the only "easy" way to test the modules is with a Tech 2 tool. Otherwise it's lots of testing with a 12-volt source and a couple of multimeters and oscilliscopes...

2004 yukon xl denali self-leveling rear air shocks


There's a lever that connects the driver-side rear shock to the Automatic Level Control module (the air compressor and the ride-height sensor). Disconnect the lever from the shock and rotate it up and hold it. The compressor should kick in when you hold in place after a few seconds. If it doesn't kick in, make sure your fuses and relays are good. Otherwise, you may have a failed ALC module/burned out air compressor (from the shocks being shot). After you replace the shocks (and after you recouped from the heart attack you had when you shelled out $500+ for each shock), replace the ALC module/compressor (it's all one unit), and test it - it should kick on when you rotate the lever up again.

Figure about $350 for the ALC module from your dealer, and make sure the part numbers match! Your truck came with an upgraded ALC module from the 2001-2004 module, which were prone to water damage.
