I have a 2001 Ford F-350 Turbo diesel. I had a small oil leak that started about 2 years ago and the drip was coming off the transmission torque converter housing. When I rebuilt the transmission I asked them to fix the rear main seal, thinking this was the problem. They informed me it was not the rear seal but in fact was leaking from the top of the engine. It was a small leak so I just endured it because of the hassle involved with removing the turbo and hoses to track in down. The problem! It is now a major leak that reminds me of tracking a wounded deer and when I stop a puddle of major size immediately starts forming. This leak IS pooling behind the turbo but I cannot see where and why. Is there a fitting of sensor or some line that might be the source of this problem or could it be a valve cover gasket.....Please help
MY 2001 7.3 was leaking the same way. The dealer said the o'rings under the pedestal were leaking. I had the dealer replace the o'rings. By the time I got home, it was leaking again. Called the service department and told the manager,and they put on a new pedestal and o'rings. They only charged me half price for the pedestal and no labor. That did stop the leaks.

This is a hard question to answer, but I will try to help. I would assume that you have taken some portion of the turbo system off.
First, it is possible for one side to be good and the other to be bad. You would want to look at the exhaust ports from the heads to see if there is oil going to the Turbo from a bad Valve seal from a cylinder or a bad oil ring on a Piston.
Once you are assured that the problem is in the Turbo, there are oil seals on the rotor shafts. If there is a roughness in an oiled bushing or shaft surface, the Turbo slows down. This would reduce power. You may be able to feel the roughness with your hands.
Another Fixya Expert may be able to tell you more about testing the RPM of the Turbo and they may know how to do it without disassembling them. I hope my input has helped.
If the engine is running ok it will be a return line,or a leaking injection line,Has your engine been worked on before on the top end if and line has been bent in the past it is proned to leak,I hope this helps
What you have described is a classic turbo air leak. Check the clamps & air lines from the turbo to the intake. If you do not find an air leak (you should be able to hear the air escaping) it will be a turbo problem. Unlike gasoline engines too much fuel in proportion to the air will cause the vehicle to run hot and also to smoke.
Diesels do lose a little oil out the blow-by tube. If the engine temp. is higher then normal then you will lose more then normal amounts. If you are not leaking it then you are burning it, Possibly worn rings, head-gasket, or oil leak inside turbo. 68 MPH and higher doesn't sound unusual, is the engine still stock?
ok ive experienced this same problem, my dad has the same year truck as u.first year powerstroke, you have to remove the turbo, there will be one bolt in the turbo stand, u will need a 10mm universal joint for a 1/4 inch drive ratchet, to remove it, but under the turbo stang there will be 2 O rings, replace those and u will be set to go.
Could be the Turbo oil return pipe seal, its a cheap about $10 but you need to get to the pipe. Its just a bit tricky to reach and you will need the gasket to go on the other end of the pipe when you take it off. Its a well know fault check the Volvo Forums web site.
