Question about 1994 Pontiac Sunbird
I have a 1994 Pontiac Sunbird LE 3.1 V6 5-speed. Today at the store my car all of a sudden would not leave first gear, but I could move the shifter any way i wanted. I drove to the nearest auto repair shop (about 4 blocks away) and I'm waiting to hear back. What do you think it is and how much do you think it will cost. (I live in MN, I'm sure that will make a difference in price).
Here. This is probably your problem. I had the EXACT same thing with my 5-speed manual '91.
Either the clip broke that holds the shift cable to the transmission (You can visibly jiggle the cable and see if it's attatched).
OR, you could have a break in one of the cables. It's a VERY cheap fix if you rip one out at a junkyard.
It's like 4 dollars or something. Take apart the center console (It's not that hard to do), remove the clips that hold the cables at the shift lever and make sure that the rubber piece that hides between the fire-wall and the engine (Located under the carpet on the firewall) is removed so you can slide the cables right out. Installing the new ones is very easy.
Hope this helps.

Sounds like just a broken Cable in your shifter. Should be fairly easy to fix and cheap the cable should be more than 70.00 usd if that and the repair should take about an hour so what ever the shop charges plus the price of the parts. I would say 150.00 May be depending on the shops prices. don't be to scared I have seen the cable **** out many many times and I am sure thats the problem, So don't let them scam you if they try to say its the tranny get a second opinion.
