Without anymore info just taking a guess here but either you have a shorted ground wire a bad headlight switch or a bad wiring harness between drivers door where it plugs into body....very common on 2001 they didn't seal body seams correctly and water enters harness causing many different issues...if that's it Hyundai dealers sell a repair kit for that part of harness I've done over a thousand of them

Hi Colin, I suggest a diagnostic scan. It seems to me that you have a internal failure with one or more sensor or other problems with the ABSystem. Regards John

Cannot get the 2001 Hyundai Elantra to pass the emissions test as the light stays on. When we shut it off, it will come back on after a few miles.

You need to have your check engine light checked to see what the code errors are and repair the problem so that it will pass smog. The check engine light is on telling you that something is wrong with the vehicle.

When I turn on the car and start driving it will

NEED check engine light code. just shooting in the dark, but it could be your throttle position sensor or the gear indicator (some times called neutral safety switch). to try and reset it (works on some models) when its doing this (giving you grief). pull over to the side of the road when safe and shut off the car (put in park) then press the accelerator all the way to the floor for 30 seconds. then start the car (take foot off of accelerator first) might cure the problem. engine error code would be most helpfull

I have a hyundai elantra 2001.. the brake light and the battery light both turn on.. what could be the problem...

Your alternator is probably not charging at full capacity. The brake light is next in sequence with the battery light, and will glow dimly. (Set your parking brake, and it will glow brighter.) I replaced the alternator, and cleared up the problem.
