2009 patriot battery light came on and steering is hard

if it has an electric power steering system, the battery light indicates alternator failure ( belt or alternator problems ) and there is insufficient power to run the power steering
again if the drive belt for the alternator is broken or missing , that will put on the battery light and there will be no power steering as the power steering pump will not be driven either

If I changed the alternator and the new alternator is good why would my battery light still be on

A open in the wiring somewhere , a burnt fuse or fusible link ! I don't know what make , model an year vehicle you have but most all newer vehicles the charging systems are controlled by the PCM / ECM - engine computer . You should start by doing a good inspection of the wiring harness an connectors on the alternator , no lose connections ! I would tell you to check for battery voltage on the heavier wire on the back of the alternator ! If I knew what make an model an year I could tell you what fuse's to look at ! How to know if timing belt is bad or alternator is bad

The timing belt is internal to the engine. It is routinely replaced according to the mileage of your vehicle. It is a fairly significant job but if you don't do it it can break and your engine stops. You did not give year make model and engine size so I can't really tell you if you have a zero tolerance motor or not, but if you do you risk bending the valves if the timing belt breaks. Some models have chains and they don't need servicing unless the guides wear out or at real high miles the chain can stretch. (Depending on model usual change mileage is 90-100K)

The alternator is external and driven by the motor with a serpentine belt that runs your power steering, A/C and some models pollution pumps. The alternator is what charges your battery. Most chain parts stores like Napa, AutoZone and Advance will do a free alternator check. Your alternator should put out at least 13-14.5 volts to charge your battery. When the alternator goes bad the car will stop running and you will not be able to start without a jump. After it starts if it cuts off again, the alternator is probably the problem because it can run with out battery power but not without alternator. The car can run for a while with just the battery if it is charged enough, but it will eventually run out of battery power and shut down. There should be a light or gauge that comes on when the battery or alternator is bad.

I have a 2006 Dodge Charger and recently my battery light came on. I did manage to continue driving at night and made it home but the next morning the battery was too low to start the car. The powered...

check the drive belt for condition and tension as you drove on the battery only because the alternator was not working . The battery you replace was a good battery just needed charging. Putting the car in gear lowers the rpm's below that necessary to spin the alternator fast enough to keep the light off . When the alternator is needed the drive belt of some other failure in the alternator comes into play . have it checked out at an accredited auto electrician

Everytime i jump start my car it cranks but the battery light keeps coming on but i change the alternator and battery but it keeps turning off

check alternator output voltage. Should be 14.7v measure at rear of alternator and again at battery. they should be the same. if not
after that the wiring needs to be checked out. if alternator reads below 14.2v with everything turned on replace it.

if you have replaced alternator and battery and belts are tight .but light is still on then you can go to a parts place and they can double ck your alternator to see if it is putting out the correct amps ,and then if your prob is solved you can disconnect battery for 2 or 3 mins and should clear light on dash.if not then take it to someone with hand held computer to clear trouble code

My battery light it on I change the atl still on what coul be

Usually, the battery light (red in color) is hooked directly to the alternator and indicates when the alternator is not putting out enough power of the appropriate voltage. So, I would try to change the alternator again, making sure that the thick cable is not overtightened which can sometimes mess up the voltage regulator or electronics of the alternator. Also, make sure the belt is tight and turning the pulley by observing the pulley spinning when the engine is at idel and looking at the side of it.

One can use a test light to verify that positive current is present at the alternator's positive terminal (thick positive wire) that is held on by a nut.

How to change a alternator on 98 honda accord v6, 3.0

Shut off engine and let it cool down. Remove the alternator bolts. This will loosen belt and allow you to remove alternator. Disconnect and label wires. Have a helper help you install new alternator while tightening belt. You need about 1/8 inch slack on the belt. You can purchase a belt tension tool to help you measure. Tighten alternator bolts and plug wires. Turn on engine and check that battery holding steady voltage.

Battery light and brake light come on and lights dim and engine run rough thinking alternator but want to make sure does any body know?

It sounds like it to me too. If your car has separate belts on the front and not a serpentine belt, try tightening the belt for the alternator before you buy a new one. Belts stretch over time and need to be adjusted, if there is no adjustment left it is time for a new belt. Also make sure the wires on the back of the alternator are tight and not corroded ( greenish colored). Clean them up with some emery cloth and re attach. Do them one at a time so you don't get mixed up. Hope this helps.

Your alternators should have a warranty on them...but if your car is breaking alternators, you may have the wrong size belt...maybe to small and putting to much strain on your alternator.
