Ford Aerostar shifter on the column

I recently believe the linkage broke on the shifter. Before it broke, the shifter was loose, now it hangs free and will not change gears. Is this a job I can do myself? And will I have to pull the steering wheel to do it?

Check under the dash where shift linkage connects to shift cable will be two #30 torx bolts which have probably worked loose you do not have to remove wheel easy fix

My 2000 ford focus wont shift. Its not the transmission because I can shift it manually a the transmission. Could this be the linkage?

I think your shifter cable broke go back to the linkage at the trans and find the bracket the cable attaches to and try to pull the cable through if you can it broke that's why I think the shifter lever is now all over the place also go to the bottom off the steering column it may have just come loose at the bracket inside the car good luck Adam you'll find it Stephen

Will not shift into park.

Does the shifter feel loose or sloppy?
Are all other gears indicating correct and in there correct location?
How about manual 1st gear is it only operating 1st gear and the shifter is actually able to get down to 1st?

I believe you are going to find your shift linkage is loose at the base of the steering column where the shift cable attached to the shifter tube. there are 2 T30 torx screws there which often come loose and cause this concern. You can access this by laying upside down in the floor board. it is very tight and painful but possible. Check this and let me know.

I have 91 ford explorer and the transmission was not slipping. I parked it one day and it no longer shifts into gear. This is an automatic. Could the drive shaft be out or does this sound like a shift...

First thing check your fluid level, its low enough it won't go into gear and if its full, then check your shift linkage, it should be cable and it may have broke and last if the cable and fluid are good, check the shifter column thats attached to the steering column if its loose or worn out it could prevent it from going into gear.

Shift lever on column came loose inside column.

no, u shouldn't have to pull the steering wheel. pull the cover off the column, there are 2 or 4 nuts that hold the column up to the dash, remove them and let the column lay on the seat- u should disconnect your battery before doing so. you can get to the shift tube from there- most likely u'll find that the bushings have gone bad and need replacement.

Ford aerostar linkage problem

so far i took apart the column mind you i had take half the dash apart to but none the less the tricky part was getting the key lock cylinder off once i did that i exposed the column an there was the problem there is a little wire that is supposed to be connected to the shifter and it had slipped off now the only thing is i have to try and put that back on its kinda tricky to because the wire is really small and its in a small work space if i get it i will follw up thanks anyways
