The light will flash in long and short frequencies, this is a diagnostic code, e.g. two long flashes followed by six short flashes equals code 26, which is clockspring. Other codes are: 46 and 47 connector under seat, 3 power supply etc.

That indicates a fault with the airbag system, and your airbags will not operate in the event of an accident.

Take your car to a good mechanic or local Ford dealer to have the problem determined.

Keep in mind that if you live in an area that does anual vehicle saftey inspections, your car will not pass inspection with that light flashing or on.

On most vehicles, the airbag light should come on for @6 seconds, and then go off if the system is working properly. If there is a fault or a problem in the system, the light will remain illuminated, or flash continuously. If the airbag light does not work properly, some vehicles have an audible tone that sounds indicating a problem with the airbag light system. when the airbag light is on it means a fault has occurred in the system and the airbag diagnostic monitor has disabled the system, the most common problem that turns the light on is a break in the connection to the steering wheel mounted airbag, this is due to a rotating ribbon contact that breaks under the steering wheel that connects the airbag to the wiring harness and the diagnostic monitor, the part is called th clock spring contact, a coiled up ribbon electrical contact that turns with the wheel.

This is either a problem with one or both of your airbags or the airbag connector located at the back of the glovebox has been disconnected for some reason. (ie. to prevent airbag opening when installing baby seat) (1999 miata does not have a baby seat airbag disabling sensor).

You should get your car inspected at your local mazda service to check if this is a wiring (plug disconnected) issue or one of your airbags is malfunctioning and needs to be replaced.

Flashing airbag light could indicate that either one of the airbags or both have a problem. Disconnecting the passenger's airbag has the same effect.
