When was the last time your O2 sensor was changed? This causes your car to run rich until engine get hot and then it will run OK.

Well first things first if the light flashes on and off now and then this means you are getting a miss fire, i would check or change as necessary your spark plugs, wires, distributor cap / rotor and go from there a badly misfiring engine will run rich and can cause damage to the catalytic converters, and also cause engine damage due to over fueling, please rate this solution and good luck, if the light is steady all the time the same applies but have your car checked for trouble codes and report them back here -Jeff PLEASE RATE !

More info needed. Is this a hatch back, sedan, or CRX? Is the odometer mechanical [old style] or digital [LCD numbers] The vehicle speed sensor [located behind the speedometer in the instrument cluster] drives both the speedometer and the odometer [mileage meter]. It sounds like an electric problem in the instrument cluster. Remove the instrument cluster and take it to your local speedometer repair shop. Look in the yellow pages for them. Or simply buy and install a used instrument cluster from a junk yard.
