The multi function light is on my dash. I think it has something to do with the gas cap not being put on properly. Can you tell me where the reset button is located?

Your car has a computer that is telling you your gas cap needs to be tightened or replaced. All newer cars have this for pollution control. Google your make and put in check gas cap ant it will explain all about it. If this sensor is not reset then here it won't pas an E TEST. which is the law in Ontario.

Put it on and make sure it's tight. You could have whoever checked it for you reset the light with the scan tool or, I think it may go out on it's own after a period of time.

Lets review - - yes if the warning light is on because of the gas cap and that problem has been taken care of, the light may go off on its own in time. Or not.
If the warning light is on because of something else, I doubt the engine is in danger of blowing up. The light is on because the computer has found something that will affect performance or emissions. It is a method to tell the driver not to drive the car and pollute the air.
So yes take it to an auto parts store and get it scanned. They can tell you what the codes are and then turn the light off. Depending on the codes, the light may come back on.

The light you see on your dashboard next to the "check engine" light is telling you that you need to check your gas cap. This light will illuminate when the gas cap is not properly installed. If you unscrew the gas cap as though you were going to fill up your van; and then tightly screw it back on, but the light stays on, then the sensor that tells the computer that the gas cap isn't screwed on properly is at fault.

This may be something as simple as a loose gas cap. Just wait until the shop tells you what wrong.. The engine does a self-diagnostic vacuum check on the fuel system to ensure fumes are not escaping into the atmosphere.. when the gas cap is loose, the system sees a leak and turns on the check engine light.
If they replaced any parts, tell them you want your old one(s).. DEMAND it/them back.. they might have tightened your gas cap and reset the light and then try to charge you for a sensor or something.

if thats what it is then the code may have to be cleared if the gas cap isnt damaged

I think that the autozone guy should learn how to read a scanner and tell you the codes so that you can verify the problem
the only problem requiring a gas cap will show up as an EVAP problem and the cap shows as a large air leak which means that the cap was not properly fitted or tightened
he could have reset the light with the scanner
removing a battery terminal looses radio codes and will affect the ECM program so should be only considered after due consultation

ok the lights on the dash come on when the censors put out a code some vehicals have them when the gas tank isnt properly sealed (gas cap left off when started) but what you can do is take it to a aoutozone or advanced aouto parts and the can get the codes your car is putting out and tell you what the problem is may be a censor gone bad.Hope this helps, good luck

There are dozens of different things that could cause the light to come on including a bad gas cap. If you get the code evap small leak detected, start by replacing the cap, it is a small expense and since you have had what appears to be an increase in repeated lights, it is a possible cause. Warning, buy the cap from the dealer. Some of the aftermarket caps just don't seal right.

If after putting on a new cap and you still have a small evap code, that is when you have what is called a smoke test. They put smoke at low pressure into the evap system and follow the line until they can see the smoke coming out.

All of this does not apply if you get other codes. Those you will have to deal with individually. Note that just because the code says something about a particular sensor, does not mean the sensor is bad, it may mean the sensor is "sensing that there is something wrong. This is why you need proper diagnosis.

The cap might need a pressure check. Just because it stays on and tight doesn't mean it is functioning properly. It must meet EPA standards to function properly. Your cap is special part of your emission system and if it is not working properly you will need to replace it and have the light reset. If you owed a code reader it would tell you the same. Auto zone does do free code reading. The check engine light usually is not a big problem,but... I will leave it at that.
