Question about Daewoo Lanos

I am replacing the timing belt and have moved the crank. I tried to set the notches to where they should be but i still cant get it to start.iam not savy with the east west motors. cranck nocth is at the bottom and the cam is at the top. HELP

    I recently rebuilt the head on my 2001 Daewoo Leganza and had to reset the timing. First understand that this is an interference engine that does not have any room for error. When setting the timing you must have it set perfectly. The timing marks must be exact...the belt can't be even one notch off!

    If you are simply changing the belt as part of your maintanance (the car was running before you took the old belt off) just line up the marks on the cam shaft with the marks on the valve cover. Both cam shaft marks should be in the 12:00 position.

    Next, there is a mark on the timing belt pulley on the crank shaft. This mark should be line up with the notch on the bottom of the plastic timing belt cover....straight down in the 6:00 pisition. Once you install the belt, and properly adjust the tensioner, turn the crank shaft with a wrench, two revolutions and see if the marks on the cams and crank shaft pulley are still in the correct position. If they are, you iin perfect timing.

    Now if you are changing the belt because if broke, this is a whole different matter. YOU WILL HAVE VALVE DAMAGE!!!!! This was the case for me. But because I had the tools and the Internet it cost me about $300 to change all of the valves and re-install everything. Otherwise I would have been looking at about a $2,000 job. GOOD LUCK!

    I have the same problem. the car died while I was driving it. Turned out to be the timing belt guide that had gone bad. Now that the guide and the timing belt have been replaced the car still will not start!! we've pulled the plugs and replaced them and have reset the timing as well....

Its running b4 you put a new timing belt?if it is put your cam shaft in the top, there should be a mark in there somewhere the crank just take off the no.1 plugs spin it till the piston go all the way up

I just changed my water pump and timming belt on my 1995 accord it is a 6 cyl i have the crank and one camshaft lined up but cant get the back camshaft to line up

You need to re-do it: take the belt back off. Now turn the crank counter clockwise, just a little, maybe 3 notches, to put all the pistons down just a bit in the block. Now set both camshafts on their prospective marks, then move the crank back to TDC. Place the timing belt back on and rout and set as per manufacturer's instructions. Hope you get it this time. Also hope you have a manual to refer to. If not, better check the procedure-some allow only a certain way to set the tension assembly to get proper tension on the belt. Good luck.

I strongly recommend you consult a repair manual for the timing belt install procedure. Depending if you have a hydraulic or mechanical tensioner for the belt, the procedure is different. If you register for free at, listing make, model and year, you could find the procedure under "repair guides".
Here is a shortened guide: Align notch of crank sprocket with the arrow on the oil pump housing, then back off 3 notches or teeth, (counterclockwise to back off).
Align notch of cam sprocket with mark on the inner belt cover-it is at top of engine-notch on cam will be almost straight up.
Move crankshaft to 1/2 notch before arrow on oil pump housing. Install belt starting at crankshaft, then around water pump, then around camshaft sprocket last.
Move crank to TDC (notch right with arrow) to take up belt slack.
Reinstall tensioner, and tighten fasteners as follows: Mechanical tensioner-250 inch pounds.
Hydraulic tensioner assembly pulley bolt-50 foot pounds. Hydraulic tensioner assembly and pivot bracket bolt-23 foot pounds.
Remove tensioner plunger pins-for either mechanical or hydraulic tensioners. Tension is correct when plunger pin can be removed and replaced easily.
Rotate crankshaft at least two revolutions, and recheck timing marks.
Reinstall timing belt cover, engine mount bracket, engine mount, and crankshaft damper. Tighten crank damper pulley bolt to 105 foot pounds.
Reinstall drive belts and accessories.

I know the info on the tensioner is confusing: why you need to consult a repair manual or register at autozone. You have to compress the plunger on the hydraulic tensioner after removing it and insert a pin (a very small Allen wrench works-5/64 inch Allen wrench). If a mechanical tensioner, you will need an 8 mm Allen wrench to rotate the tensioner counter clockwise (this is before or after removed from engine), the use a 1/8 inch or 3 mm Allen wrench to insert into plunger hole, to hold the tensioner retracted until installed. See what I mean? Post back if unclear...or just find the repair procedure. Sorry, no diagrams available for me. I'm too old and crochety-lol.

did you know how to replace timing belt it has to be installed in a specified way or it wont start
if it broke and you replaced it then the story is different as if it breaks while running usually it also bends your valves you should see a technician for this

I have a 2002 pt cruiser with a 2.4 litre motor. I've tried to install the timing belt but it does not line up with the 4 scrib marks. I do not know how to rotate the cams in the right order for the belt...

It is typical to have to stretch the belt a tad as you install--needs to be tight across the cam sprockets and from the right cam to the crank gear. Then the tensioner should take up the slack on the other side. 0996b43f80209592.jpg

  1. Set the crankshaft sprocket at TDC by aligning the sprocket with the arrow on the oil pump housing.
  2. Set the camshafts timing marks so that the exhaust camshaft sprocket is a 1 / 2 notch below the intake camshaft sprocket.
  3. Install the timing belt by starting at the crankshaft. Go around the water pump sprocket, idler pulley, camshaft sprockets and the tensioner.
  4. Move the exhaust camshaft sprocket counterclockwise to align the marks and to remove any slack.
  5. Insert a 6mm Allen wrench into the tensioner opening on the top plate of the tensioner pulley. Rotate the top plate counterclockwise. The pulley will move against the belt and the tensioner setting notch will start to move clockwise. Continue to move the top plate counterclockwise until the setting notch is aligned with the spring tang. Using the Allen wrench, to prevent the top plate from moving, tighten the tensioner lock bolt to 220 inch lbs. (25 Nm). Make sure the setting notch and spring tang are still aligned after the lock nut is tighten. If not repeat the procedure.
  6. Remove the wrench from the belt tensioner.
    NOTE When repositioning the crankshaft to the TDC position, this must be done during the clockwise rotation movement. If the TDC is missed, rotate a further two full turns until TDC is reached. Do not rotate the crankshaft counterclockwise as this will result in improper tensioner settings.
  7. Rotate the crankshaft two full revolutions and verify that the TDC marks are properly aligned.
  8. Check the spring tang is within the tolerance window, if not repeat the previous two steps.

The timing on my Geo Tracker is off.

Sounds like you have the timing belt off a notch or two. Set the crank pulley at the notch and TDC then remove the top screws on the belt cover and pull the cover back far enough to shine a light to check the cam pulley mark against the notch it should align with !

You obviously need to replace your TPS, and you may need a new belt tensioner as well. On these cars the timing belt setup is not about no 1 cylinder being top dead center. Here are the proper steps to do a timing belt on this vehicle:

To change the timing belt first place the right side of the vehicle on a jack stand and remove the right front tire. Remove the plastic cover inside the wheel well to expose the harmonic balancer. Remove the serpentine belt (standard 3/8" rachet will set in the belt tensioner to relieve tension). Remove the harmonic balancer (19mm). Place a jack under the engine on the right side of the vehicle, then remove the engine mount from the top of the fender well, (17mm deep well socket and 17mm wrench required) it is not necessary to remove the mount from the side of the engine. Remove the timing cover, (10mm) it has 2 nuts. Loosen the timing belt tensioner, (10mm) then pry it away to relieve the tension. Slide the timing belt off of the cam gear.

To position the new belt, the cam gear has a arrow on it, and the cylinder head has a small dot. Align the arrow with dot, and make sure it is aligned (the arrow must point up). The crank gear has a notch and the engine has a groove to align the notch. Again, make sure the notch and groove are aligned (they again will be up). Place the new timing belt in position around the crank gear, the water pump and belt tensioner and leave the slack at the top. Again relieve any tension from the belt tensioner, and slide the belt on to the cam gear. Place a slight bit of tension on the belt and tighten the belt tensioner. Use the 19mm bolt from the harmonic balancer and turn the engine 2 complete turns and verify that the cam gear and crank gear are in their proper positions and aligned with the dots and notches. After 2 complete turns of the engine, and verifying everything is still aligned, re-assemble in reverse. No further adjustment is necessary.

Note:There is no timing adjustment for this vehicle, and if you are not properly aligned on the cam gear and crank gear it will not run properly.

remove the rocker cover and look at the back of the cams first ,also turn over with a socket and rachet before you try to start engine.-not sure as never seen this model engine here in spain but iam sure timing marks are a slot on each cam that has to be level with the head or their is a grove in the front or end bearing cap with a notch on the cam.If you cant find anything then set up to basics ,like my motor mechanics exam ,An engine with a box of bits and refit the lot with no timing marks .,easy

2000 quad cam subaru wont start after replacing cam belt

Your 180 off dont try to start it anymore unless you want bent valves.I just bought a fixer w/bent valves due to 180 off time the woodruff key on a Subaru isnt tdc its the vertical line on the outer fin on the pulley in line with the vertical line on the oil pump 12 oclock the top cams single line 12 oclock. II the double lines pointing 6 oclock pointing to bottom cams II double line at 12 oclock.A manual  is pricless for this info and saves time

according to a manual , the crank key will point to arrow , the intake cam should have an letter i aligned with arrow on belt cover and exhaust cam should have letter e aligned with arrow on belt cover , and as always rotate the engine 2 full turns to inspect timing marks before cranking or trying to start the engine . if you haven't taken the original belt off yet , paint your marks for quicker reference .

this is a complex fix. if the timing belt is off, you will have to align both of the cams (V6??) to their respective notches on the back plate that protects the belt. You must also align the crank shaft to TDC, top dead center. Put the belt on (with tensioner off) then put tensioner on and release allen key. turn the engine by hand or using the starter two full rotations, the notches on the tops of the cam pulleys should be perfectly alligned with the notches on the back plate. if not, you missed a notch in the wrong spot and have to try again.

i've done this twice, once on a lexus es250 v6, and again on my 94 camry, its one of the hardest things i've ever done when repairing cars. be patient, have a friend help, don't get frustrated. if you really cant get it, have a mechanic come to your house and drop him a few bills to help you. you'll be glad you did
