Question about 1988 Mercury Cougar

1 Answer

Headlights suddenly turn off

The headlights on my 88 Cougar suddenly turn off for a minute or 2 while I am driving and I can hear a crackling noise behind the dash. Only the low beams don't work, the high beams still work. There is no particular time when this occurs.

Turn on headlights and dash lights go off, gauges bounce, lights all come on or one side, air compressor turns on, turn headlights off and radio comes on. Turn left turn signal and hear noise under dash....

Take off the negative battery cable for 10 minutes. While waiting for that make sure you have all the ground straps connected that go to the battery cable end and to the engine.

I need to install the Headlights on a '90 cougar. What tools will i need and what proceedures to take?

Do you just need to replace burned out bulbs or the entire headlight assembly? I replaced the assembly on my '90 Mercury Cougar when the lens cover came off (evidently while was just gone one day). Turns out you couldn't replace just the lens, had to replace entire assembly. I found one in a pick and pull junkyard and it was quite inexpensive. The assembly was held in place with three or four spring clips which can be removed with a pair of fine-nose pliers, but be careful, due to the age of the car, the spring metal in the clips is somewhat brittle, I had one of them break.
