Most likely a warped rotor and with new pads it has locked it's self up.

What size socket do i need for the drive axle/hub nut for a 1997 Chevrolet Cavalier?


I think that one is a 32mm...could b wrong tho..
I'd grab my 32 and 36 if I were going to take it off without looking

Hello goldwingtazz,

One of the most common reason for repeated hub assembly failures is the use of the wrong hub assembly.

Technical Service Bulletin Number 08-03-08-003A addresses this problem. There were 7 different Gen II 4x2 and 4x4 applications and now Gen III have only 3 part numbers for the same application.

The new hub assembly will have a spline open center and this is acceptable

Proper torque is 133 ft. lbs the mounting bolt.

  2. Remove the wheel and tire assembly.
  3. Remove the three screws retaining the cap and remove the cap from the hub.
  4. Remove the lockring seated in the groove of the brake rotor assembly.
  5. Remove the hub body assembly from the brake rotor assembly. To install:
  6. The installation is the reverse of the removal.

Servicing front hubs


Automatic Locking Hub

  1. Shift transfer lever to the ``2H'' position, then move vehicle forward and rearward approximately three feet.
  2. Raise and support vehicle, then remove wheel and tire assemblies.
  3. Disconnect brake hose from caliper.
  4. Remove caliper locking bolt.
  5. Rotate pad assembly upward then remove pad retaining clip and caliper assembly
  6. Remove brake pad support bracket.
  7. Remove hub cap retaining bolts, then the hub cap, Fig. 15.
  8. Remove housing assembly, snap ring and shims.
  9. Remove drive clutch assembly, inner cam and lock washer.
  10. Using tool J-36827 or equivalent, remove hub nut.
  11. Remove hub and disc assembly.Manual Locking Hub

    1. Shift transfer lever to the ``2H'' position and set free wheeling hub into Free position.
    2. Raise and support vehicle, then remove wheel and tire assemblies.
    3. Disconnect brake hose from caliper.
    4. Remove caliper locking bolt.
    5. Rotate pad assembly upward then remove pad retaining clip and caliper assembly
    6. Remove brake pad support bracket.
    7. Remove housing assembly retaining bolts then the housing assembly Fig. 16.
    8. Remove snap ring and shims.
    9. Remove body assembly and lock washer.
    10. Using tool J-36827 or equivalent, remove hub nut.
    11. Remove hub and disc assembly

About an hour a side...This is the whole job and pictures....

The hub and wheel bearing unit is serviced as a complete assembly. Replacement of the front drive hub and bearing assembly can be done without having to remove the steering knuckle from the vehicle. However, if the hub/bearing assembly is frozen to the steering knuckle, removal of the steering knuckle is required.
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Remove the cotter pin from the end of the stub axle. Remove the nut lock and spring washer. With the brakes applied, loosen, but do NOT remove the axle nut and washer with the vehicle still on the ground or damage to the wheel bearing will result.
  3. Raise and safely support the vehicle. Remove the wheel.
  4. Remove the front brake caliper assembly from the steering knuckle assembly and support from the strut assembly using a strong piece of wire.
    1. Remove the front brake rotor from the hub/bearing assembly.
    2. Remove the retaining nut and washer from the halfshaft stub axle.
    3. Remove the ABS wheel speed sensor from the steering knuckle.
    4. Remove the 4 hub and bearing assembly mounting bolts from behind the steering knuckle.
    5. Remove the hub and bearing assembly from the steering knuckle.
  5. To install:
    1. Thoroughly clean the mating surfaces of the steering knuckle and the hub and bearing assembly of any foreign material or nicks so the surfaces are clean and smooth.
    2. Install the new hub and bearing assembly and tighten the mounting bolts in a crisscross pattern to 45 ft. lbs. (65 Nm). Be sure the hub and bearing assembly is seated squarely against the front steering knuckle.
    3. Install the disc brake rotor.
    4. Install the brake caliper assembly onto the steering knuckle.
    5. Install the axle washer and nut. Tighten but do not torque.
    6. Install the ABS wheel speed sensor.
    7. Install the wheel and lug nuts. Torque the lug nuts, in sequence, to 95 ft. lbs. (129 Nm).
    8. Lower the vehicle. Do NOT roll the vehicle until the axle nut has been properly torqued or damage to the front wheel bearings will result.
    9. With the vehicle's brakes applied, torque the axle nut to 180 ft. lbs. (244 Nm). Install the spring washer, nut lock and a new cotter pin. Wrap the cotter pin prongs tightly around the axle nut lock.
    10. Reconnect the negative battery cable. Check the wheel alignment.

Installing wheel hub onto drive shaft and strut.


The strut would not extend. Strut are made to go inside of the coil spring, and held in the compressed position.
If the strut is sticking past the coil spring something has gone wrong. You'll need to compress spring and fix it.

Had brakes put on and they told me hub on the passenger side was coming loose


IT WOULD SOUND AS IF THE SHOP YOU TOOK YOUR VEHICLE TO USED THE WRONG TERMINOLOGY. BY THE TERM LOOSE I BELIEVE THEY ARE REFERRING TO BEARING PLAY. SINCE THE LATE MODEL TRAIL BLAZERS USE A SEALED HUB BEARING ASSEMBLY WITH A SPEED SENSOR BUILT INTO THE UNIT THIS IS MORE THAN LIKELY YOUR PROBLEM. IT HAS BEEN FROM MY EXPERIENCE A COMMON PROBLEM WITH THIS MODEL VEHICLE. I HAVE ALREADY REPLACED 3 HUB BEARING UNITS THIS YEAR AND KNOW THAT I WILL SEE MORE. JUST TAKE YOUR VEHICLE TO A REPUTABLE REPAIR SHOP AND LET THEM DIAGNOSE THE HUB BEARING ASSEMBLY PROPERLY. HOPE THIS HELPS.

Cannot get front hub assembly to come off. caliper and rotor are removed, spindle nut and cotter pin removed, still will not budge, even with a puller.


These things always stick. Here's my trick to get them off. Get 4 more bolts with the same thread, but much longer. Screw them into the holes, start the engine (DON'T TOUCH THE BRAKE PEDAL), and turn the wheel back and forth. As you get all the way to one side the longer bolts will hit the axle housing and push the hub/bearing assembly out of the knuckle. Snap on also mahes a special tool for this that does the same thing, but uses the factory bolts. There's probably 20 different ways you can rig something up that will work off the same principle. You're gonna have to get creative if you wanna drive it this week.

My 99 Alero has had the left front hub assembly repalaced for the fourth time in 2 1/2 years. I had it replaced three weeks ago and it has the same problem again and needs to be replaced again. Any idea...


Is the wheel bearing failing or the wheel sensor inside? Is the vehicle totally stock or does it have aftermarket whells on it? Some aftermarket wheels have the wrong offset and put excessive strain on the hubs if you have the wrong wheels change back to the factory wheels and see if your problem goes away.
