i have the new tumbler with key but how do i get the old one out

  • Anonymous Apr 16, 2009

I lost my ignition key for my 1989 3251. I ordered a new key from BMW,
only to find out that my key ignition had already been replaced by a
previous owner (which is why I had two keys ... I( guess) Any ideas on
the cheapest way to resolve? I have been surfing around the web hearing
about the horror of trying to replace the key ignition and can't find a
    locksmith near me under $300.0

Well,

From what I remember you need to put the missing key in and then press the cylinder release, a small hole by the ignition switch. Without the key, I guess you would need a locksmith to turn the tumbler then press the switch. Lock pick set anyone?

You need to remove steering wheel to get to the access hole, normally when you see the access hole you would turn the key to the on position and push in the spring loaded pin but unfortunately you do not have the key, so you will need to drill this pin out. If you don't feel comfortable drilling it, or if you need to pull steering wheel to get access to the hole and don't have a steering wheel puller then a lock smith can make a key for about $60-$100 depending on where you are located. The service fee is mostly for going out to the vehicle.

If may be worth the money to just pay the locksmith, damage to the steering column will cost far more to repair.

Shake ya sterring wheel from side to side and try turning ya key. The lock could be stuck and needs to be freed up. This should do the trick.

Someone broke in my 2002 ford explorer and try to hot wire the car. he fail but left me with a mess. the steering column is broken wire is cut. i want to fix this on my own because anywhere i ask to fix it...

get a doner stearing column from nearest salvage,(thats what i would try). youll prolly have to buy a new key tumbler assembly and program the key to the computer anti theft sytem.
to program the new key, assuming all goes well with the new column and the new key tumbler, put the new key in ignition, turn key on for 15min, time it with a watch. after 15 min turn key off.
wait 15 more minutes. time that,
now after the 15 minutes u should b able to turn key on and start the vehicle.
the key tumbler/key switch kit should come with those instructions.
also if u buy a doner stearing shaft, i like when they let me pull it, lock the stearing wheel w/key so it doesnt turn.
there is a sensor called the "CLOCK SPRING," if u turn the wheel to far around while disconecting the stearing shaft at the bottom of column, u ruin this sensor and end up with a airbag lite on.
so b careful not to rotate the wheel more than two times in one direction the sensor is about 119 bucks u dont have to remove the stearing wheel to swap the column assemblys

Key is stuck in the ignition how do I get it out

If it`s not broke off in ignition try wiggling stearing wheel while trying to remove key if it still doesn`t want to come out try vise grips but be carefull not to brake key because if you do break key off in it then you will have to remove steering wheel to get to where pin is holding ignition switch and you will have to replace ignition switch.

Key will not turn to on cadillac esclade 2003

make sure the stearing wheel is not turned to far one way or the other. the wheek lock will prevent the key from turning. short of that you need an ignition switch. call autozone for prices. they are pretty simple to change yourself if you have a few tools.

remove the cowling around the steering wheel place the key into the ignition, you should be able to find a small pin hole on the side of the ignition barrel get a strong pin or pick and push it into the hole with the ignition turned to acc then pull the key the barrel should then pull out of the steraring collum.

if the reson you are replacing the ignition is that the key wont turn you will have to replace the holl igition set up which means you will have to pull the stearing wheel off and stearing collum out of the car (IF YOU HAVE SRS AIR BAGS DISCONECT THE BATTERY AND LEAVE THE CAR TO SIT FOR 5 MINUTS)
( UNDER THE STEARING WHEEL IS A ITEM CALLED A CLOCK SPRING DO NOT MOVE THIS YOU WILL RECONISE IT WHEN YOU SEE IT, MAKE SHOUR THE WHEELS ARE IN THE STRAIGHT AHEAD POITION BEFOR COMENCING THIS PROCEDURE. IF YOU MOVE THE CLOCK SPING YOU MAY DAMAGE IT AND CAUSE HUNDREDS OF DOLLERS WERTH OF DAMAGE)
once the collum is out you will need a center punch and hammer to slowley turn the 3 shear off bolts that hold the ignition,
remove old ignition and fit new shear the heads off the new bolts and refite the collum and steearing wheel to car.

( please if you are not shore that you can do this procedure take it to a qualifide tecnishion as the air bag system can be very dangeruse)

good luck

Ignition

apparently steering colum lock. next time try turning your steering wheel to the left while turning the key in the ignition. don't stress the ignition. though if it isn't your stearing lock the last thing you want to do is bust up the or in come cases break your key off in there. Try turning the stearing wheel though. 99% of the time thats what it is.
