Check the heater core. This is the only way that you should smell anti-freeze. It will not make the car heat up slower as far as the temperature gauge. But will make the heater heat up slower. Make sure that there is no dampness in the passenger floor board. If there is, then the heater core is leaking and will need replaced.

I have a 2000 Bmw 323 I that is having a overheating problem what would be the cause of the overheating problem a thermastat a water pump or a radiator flush

Could be any or all three or a bad cooling fan. I'd start by replacing the thermostat since they are dirt cheap. After replacing the thermostat warm the vehicle up and feel the upper radiator hose if its hot the rhe thermostat opened and the water pump is circulating coolant next check the radiator it should be hot near the upper radiator hose and significantly cooler near the lower with an even heat distribution if any parts of the radiator dont get warm/hot then you radiator is plugged. Also you need to check the operation of the cooling fan with the engine warm turn on your ac that should immediately turn the electric fan on

No heat in my 72 mark IV

The first item to check is the engine temperature. To help cold engines warm up fast, the flow of coolant is restricted by way of the thermostat-a thermal valve that opens when it's hot and closes when it's cold. When the thermostat wears out, it remains stuck open or shut, which leads to either overheating or cool operation. A worn-out thermostat might be preventing the coolant from getting warm enough to heat the cabin. Replacing the thermostat can be a 20-minute job or a real hassle. Check your service manual to see how involved the replacement is.

If the thermostat is fine, the flow of coolant in the heater core may be restricted by built-up goop. Sediment and grime can accumulate between coolant changes and collect in the heater core. A flush can be done by disconnecting the heater hoses at the water pump (when the car is cold) and using compressed air to push the coolant and gunk backward, out the inlet hose. Be sure to capture all the old coolant and dispose of it properly. Follow that with a few rounds of filling the core with tap water and flushing it out in the same way, then refill the core with mixed coolant and reattach the hoses. None of these fixes is hard, but the heater-core flush is messy, so you might want to take your car to a shop for service.

My car does not warm up vary fast takes about 15 min on a warm day and on a cold day 20 to 25 min

check the thermostat for correct opening operation as it appears stuck in the open position. check the engine temperature to ensure that the fault is not in the temp gauge circuit

1997 subaru over heats new radeator thermostat water pump

Hi,
Check to make sure the thermostat is installed the correct way around. It's easy to get it wrong.
Bulb part should face the engine block - while the spring should be on the radiator side.

For the price of a replacement - just fit a new one the right way around. Use a new gasket and a smear of blue Hymolar to seal it. Use coppergrease on the thin bolts and don't overtorque.
