I have a '98 GMC S15 4.3l, manual trans. At dead stop, idle speed is normal. In motion, idle speed is high until I come to a dead stop. Upon stopping, idle returns to normal level.

I have a 2006 GMC Envoy, idles rough at a stop when in gear, but levels out smooth when in neutral. Drives smooth on the highway.

check for a vacuum leak in the brake booster. Check this by just allowing the engine to idle with the hand brake on and if ok then put your foot on the brake and if the idle changes then there is an air leak in the booster.

shouldnt need a clamp... if your hose sucks flat thats a good sign its time for replacing...you might also want to check the rest of your hoses...

At a stop very low idle like it is going to stall

try this when your stopped apply your e brake release the brake pedal does the idle increase? push on the pedal idle get rough or lower? this usually points to a vacum leak check for loose or broken vacum hoses

When you press on the brake it sounds like Air

Your vehicle has what is called a brake booster on it. It is mounted on the firewall under the hood and your brake master cylinder is mounted to that. The brake booster works off of vacum pressure that your engine builds. When the booster goes bad the vacum pressure escapes and it sounds like a hiss at your pedal. This problem will get worse and can cause your pedal to go to the floor. This could be a dangerous situation for you. I recommend that you get this checked out for safety reasons. Hope this helps. If for some reason this goes out on you and you are on the road you can find the big vacum hose that goes into the booster, take the hose off and plug it with something. Please note if you do this you will not have power brakes after that you will be on manual brakes and it takes a lot more pressure to stop your vehicle so drive slowly and not to close until you get it fixed. If the booster goes all the way out your engine will run rough or die at idle. If you do have to block the vacum line your engine will run smooth again but it may set off the check engine light. Take care, Roger

Rough idle at higher rpm smooth

You have a vacume leak somewhere. You can try to listen for it or you can get a can of brake parts cleaner and spray it around the engine. Anywhere there is hoses or connections of any kind. When you find the leak the engine RPM's will increase. If thats not the problem it could be your EGR valve is clogged or your map sensor could be bad. Those things would usually cause a check engine light. Vacume leaks wont. Good luck
