Common problem - same happens on mine....

There are several message boards out there that suggest this is a common problem. My wife's Cabrio has an intermittent problem, and the new unit is over $800, so we live with it.

Electric windows, air control and cruise

Check the fuses first.  If it's not that, check the switches.  If it's not the switches, then it will probably be the wiring, most likely a short somewhere.

The cruise control went intermittant, then quit completely.

Where is the switch for your cruise control? Is it mounted on the turn signal stalk? If so, it's likely a failure of the stalk. The Audi cars of your generation are known for stalk failures (my 99 A4 has had it twice), and it's likely that VW and Audi share switchgear as they're both part of the same conglomerate parent company. If your switch is on the stalk, you're likely going to have to change it out for a new one. I'd recommend German AutoParts in Albany, NY for buying one ( - I've bought several parts from them in the past and they're top-notch for service and pricing.

Cruise control

When my 1999 Cabrio was new the cruise control went out. It took the dealership and along with a VW expert 10 days to find a pinched harness assembly under the battery box.
