Get your car to a bmw repair center! I had to replace my automatic transmission, had the same problem. Transmission fluid is a lifetime oil, and should be left alone! These transmissions are made in USA,and they ****!!!

SOURCE: BMW E38 735i no reverse gear..????

Before you make any other moves, I would try having the transmission flushed and refilled and filters changed and if that doesn't work, you may have burned out the modulator so you may have to shop around for another transmission or have that one rebuilt, whichever would be feasibly financial for you.

SOURCE: BMW X5 Trans Fail Safe Program,

sometimes it will clear if you turn the X5 off and restart it. however, it could be an early indication that the tranny is about to expire. i have had it happen and it cleared with a power cycle, but also had friends where it cleared for a few weeks/months and returned. this time it was really the transmission that went bad. if you can't get it to clear, then i'd suggest taking it to the dealer and have them plug into it to have a better look.

SOURCE: bmw x5 slow gear change

this is normal to some extent to try and warm up the tranny to opp temperature as soon as possible. make sure the vehicle had the latest software installed in the transmission as this could also cause a delayed shift when cold.

How to reest trans fail safe mode 2005 bmw x5 3.0 litre diesel

Have to have the transmission problem diagnosed

Best not to use it or you may ruin the trans in as little
a ten miles & may have already, using it in failsafe

Fail Safe is there to protect the trans, but only if you stop
using it almost when the light comes on.

It will cut injector pulse, ignition spark & such, to let you
know your have a problem & lock the trans in a specific
gear,BUT folks still continue to cycle the ignition key &
drive on, to the tune of $5.000 leaving their bank account

How do I reset the "transmission failsafe program" light on the dash? The car seems to drive normal except for that light being on.

Keep driving it, you will have a $5,000 repair bill

Stop using it & hope you can save the trans with the
proper diagnosis, to find the reason it went into failsafe

I have a 2004 BMW X5, i was driving up a hill when the trans failsafe prog light came on, it has done this before & I was told pull over turn engine off, wait 5min at it will go, which it did. Though...

The transmission has gone into limp mode. My Boomer done the same thing' if it wont reset itself i think the only option is a BMW dealer to faultfind. Very complicated computor controlled transmission beyond any novice im afraid.
