that ticking noise means the relay is working so you should hit the starter with some heavy metal pipe, tool or anything a couple of hits should work then try to start it if the car start or make a different sound you will need to replace the starter
You need to replace the starter solenoid, it sounds like there is too much resistance in the relay section, that is why you can start it from there but not the key.
try spraying starting fluid in air intake or throttle body. If it starts, it is a fuel problem. Can you hear ful pump run for 5 seconds when you turn key on? Pump is in tank.
I assume it won't crank. Are you getting power to the small terminal to the starter when someone turns the key? Can you jump power to it and get it to crank? It could be a bad neutral safety switch.
It sounds like you need to clean both battery cable connections on the battery and make sure they are not spread. You may have to cut off steel clamps and replace with lead kit. Also, clean the 2 smaller wires on the poitive post of the battery.

check/replace the starter relay switch in the relay box under the hood. The relay box is located on the front right of the engine compartment. easy fix, inexpensive part if that is the problem.
you may have to go to a lock smith because one of the tumblers on the key switch has dropped and it could have just been a bad switch I had a similar problem on an old aerostar and I ended up replacing the whole steer column and took it to a lock smith before I installed it so the keys matched
