Hi Kevin,
There probably isn't a single answer every time. I found this for you on my hard drive...

"18613/P2181/008577 - Performance Malfunction in Cooling System
Possible Solutions
* Check Engine Coolant Temperature Sender (G62)
* Check Coolant Thermostat
* Check Engine Cooling System
o Put the key on, fan speed on 1, and push the a/c switch. Are both fans kicking on? If not, you found the problem.
o Put the key on and fan speed on 1. Does heat come out readily from the vents?
+ No. Probably the water pump is gone.
+ Yes. Probably the thermostat is gone."

Check the electrical connector on the G62 first - make sure it is clean. Try running the engine with the G62 disconnected - does this make a difference?

Let me know how you get on. Cheers, D.

How to access trouble code

year vehicle manufactured? if 1996 & later, OBDII scanner to be plugged into a port (typically, should be near the steering column, under the dash).
older models may have OBDI (no standard location of port) scanner specific to the make of the vehicle. search the web, on how to read manually (or without scanner) the code by counting the number of blinks of the MIL (malfunction Indicator light) (aka check engine, or service engine soon).

What are obd2 trouble codes

The VERY short explanation is that it is a standard for a connector/interface that will tell you various diagnostic trouble codes that the cars computer will set.

While emissions codes are required to be set, most manufacturers also offer more codes for their own specific models.
Typically they are 4-digit codes, preceded by a number which denotes what part of the car the code relates to.
P = powertrain, B = body, C = chassis and U = Network (the computer network in the car).

So if you get a Pxxxx you know the code relates to the powertrain, and then the code is for whatever variable is out of whack (O2 sensor, RPM sensor, and myriad others).

A bad emissions sensor will often set your check engine light, so if you get that, you can read the codes with a code reader and find out what part is complaining. That will narrow down your suspects.

Lincoln ls 04 check enging light is coming on and wrench light

You will need a OBD2 code reader, that will give you a "trouble code" then that will tell you what direction to look in, for the problem.

What does the diagnostic code P2181 mean on a Subaru Impreza WRX?

this is a coolant performance code. Usuallly sets this code if the connector was left unhooked to the coolant sensor or the thremostat is stuck open. By any chance do you have a gauge that seems to be on the cold side ??

Engine light comes on - Code shows P0300 and then

OBD II 300 Random/Multiple Cylinder Misfire Detected

When the misfire monitor detects a misfire, it will trigger the check engine light with the specific cylinder number as the last digit in the P030X code. For instance cylinder 1 misfire is P0301, cylinder 2 is P0302 etc. In this case we have either multiple cylinders misfiring, or the computer simply can't determine the specific cylinder, and as such we are left with the P0300 in computer memory.

Possible Causes:

Fuel injectors, related wiring, sensors and computer issues
Running out of gas, or poor fuel quality
Evaporative emissions system (EVAP) concerns: fuel vapors leaking into engine
Incorrect Fuel Pressure
EGR system concerns: leaking EGR valve or restricted ports
Base engine concerns: low compression, valve train problems and timing issues
Ignition system concerns including, but not limited to:
Faulty spark plugs
Faulty coil or related wiring
Ignition module or related wiring issues
Ignition related sensor faults or wiring issues
