SOURCE: Lock up torque converter won't lock up

Look under the hood at the top of the transmission towards the radiator. There will be a 4 wire plug or more. Its more kinda in top front lower of trans. Its usually the only set of wires plugged in in the front.Make sure its plugged in or that no wires are unplugged on it. Is there anything you can tell me you had done on the car recently. The torque converter also works of of the brake light switch which is located just above the brake pedal its self..Check and see if the pedal is coming all the way back after applying them and that connections there also look good.

SOURCE: flywheel and torque converter don't match

Match everything up side by side.If both units are identical in every way there is no reason to buy anything else. Aside from matching, make sure the one you are installing has all the same electrical connections.

SOURCE: grand prix torque converter locks up too soon

Either the speed sensor, TCC solenoid , ECU or a stuck check ball in a lockup plate. I recommend taking this to a transmission shop this could get fustrating.

I have been getting the code p0740 it says something about the torque converter clutch circuit. it doesn't seem to be going into over drive. dose anyone have any suggestions I can try.

On some cars, there is a TCC solenoid in the transmission which can be replaced by removing the bottom pan. In some cars this solenoid can't be accessed without major disassembly.

Transmission lock up

Not sure how many miles you have but it could be a weak tranny fluid pump or your torque converter is dying. It could also be a bad transmission filter.

Go here - www.jeepforum.com/forum/f11/tech-faq-links-tsbs-89273/ - and find the AW-4 Service and Diagnostic Manual. Looks like you need to test some solenoids.

1998 jeep grand cherokee 4x4. have the p0740 code. have to start from neutral, then shifts faily well. May start fluttering and making noise, have to put back to N, then to D and once again will shift. ...

P0740 JEEP - Torque Converter Clutch Circuit
Symptoms
- Engine Light ON (or Service Engine Soon Warning Light)
- Transmission shift shock
- Vehicle may not shift into the highest gear

Possible causes
- Low transmission fluid level
- Dirty transmission fluid
- Faulty torque converter clutch solenoid valve
- Torque converter clutch solenoid valve harness or connectors
- Torque converter clutch solenoid valve circuit is open or shorted

When is the code detected?
Torque Converter Clutch (TCC) unlocked for 10 sec., ECM commands converter lock-up and did not record engine speed drop.

P0740 JEEP Description
The torque converter clutch solenoid valve is activated, with the gear in D4, by the Transmission Control Module (TCM) in response to signals sent from the vehicle speed and the Engine Control Module (ECM). Lock-up piston operation will then be controlled. When the torque converter clutch solenoid valve is activated, the torque converter lockup clutch will engage creating a 1 to 1 RPM ratio between the transmission input shaft and the rotational speed of the torque converter.

Lock-up operation, however, is prohibited when A/T fluid temperature is too low.

When the accelerator pedal is depressed (less than 2/8) in lock-up condition, the engine speed should not change abruptly. If there is a big jump in engine speed, there is no lock-up.

My trans downshifts out of overdrive andwhen it does the jeep will surge whenever you try to accelerate, does this sound like a torque converter lock up switch problem?

Hi and welcome to FixYa!

As a first course of action please do check the transmission fluid if it's burnt. If it's not and it's sitting on the right level then it's definitely the torque converter. It tends to disengage when faulty. If that's the case then it will require replacement.

Hope this helps and thank you for using FixYa! Have a good one!

That is the torque converter clutch circuit. Have the torque converter switch and/or relay switch checked, or torque converter lock up switch.
