Question about 1992 Volkswagen Golf

3 Answers

Hi We have a 1998 volks golf. It will not start. Battery good, connections good. Seem to have pwer everywhere. Checked the little wire (someone told us to) going to the starter .. good. When you turn the Key to start it just clicks - once. Sound is like a fairly loud click. It does not sound like it is coming from the starter but reather more to "the left" if you are looking at the engine.(Did that make sense?). Got any ideas on what is wrong and how do we fix it? Thanks for the help Nance and Carl

I have a 94 Golf and it is doing something very similar. The car will start when jumped/pushed and when it's the first time it's driven that day or it's been turned off for a long time (generally) but if I drive it then shut it off and try to start it again somewhat soon it wont start. I replaced the starter less than a year ago and timing belt looks fine. Any other suggestions? Thanks.

YOUR BATTERY HAS A PLUS MINUS CONNECTION, THE LEAD CONNECTIONS ARE HELD ON THE BATTERY BY TINY CLAMPS, NOTICEABLE BUT TINY, CHECK ITS STILL ON, IF NOT LIFT THE LEAD OFF THE CONNECTOR THEN PUT IT BACK ON,OR JUST GIVE IT A TURN,THIS WILL RESET YOUR MOST RECENT TRIP MILEAGE BUT SHOULD START,UNTIL YOU GET A CLAMP,THERE QUITE HARD TO FIND THOUGH! I HAD BEEN USING A BATTERY STARTER EACH TIME THE CAR WUDNT START UNTIL I REALISED WHAT THE PROBLEM WAS,

Hi, You should check the battery and alternator one or both may be bad. Have your mechanic check it out for you. Good luck.

Try unplugging and wd40 spray in them and re plug harnist connections under bonnit, and check that the crank censers have not picked up iron dust from bellhousing as crank censors are magnetic Re: Jeff

I have a 99 VW Golf and the battery went totally dead. When I tried to jump it the cables started smoking and the wires melted. A volatage meter registers zero when the battery is connected to the car...

At 5 Volts the battery is totally cactus (a fully charged battery should read above 12.6 V) and from the description of hot melting wires appears the battery has a dead short between cells. Try a new battery and check battery terminal voltage before and after connection, with every thing turned off. If terminal voltage drops more than 0.2 V it would indicate excessive current draw by a faulty component. You may have to have the electrical system checked by an auto electrician to determine if there is any other faukts in the system.
