I have a 1998 Chevrolet Lumina and it was sitting for about a couple of months and I live in Michigan and experiencing very cold below zero temps...I had replaced the battery with a new one and it started right up after installation. Cleaned up the car (took it thru a car wash) and drive it for 304 hrs and then it was parked for over 12 hrs and has auxiliary power but will not start. I thought it might the key as it has a special chip (bought a new one moments ago - and still same issue). Service tech at a Chevrolet delaership indicated to try astarting and tapping on the starter and if it starts then it is a bad starter.....please assist of having some other options or areas to check...many thanks

If the starter cranks but the engine does not turn on, then you have a problem with the V.A.T.S. system (V.A.T.S. = Vehicle Anti Theft System) if starter is not working then re-check battery first, then take alternator to local parts store, they have alternator bench testers, if alternator is o.k. your starter is faulty. alternators should produce bout 12.75 volts to 14.5 volts, amperage varies on alt. types

1998 Chevy Lumina 3.1 overheating - top radiator hose collapses on throttle, then opens up when you let off.

With the engine cold remove the radiator cap. Start the engine. Watch the coolant. If you see bubbles constantly perkulating out of the coolant than you most likely have a head gasket that has failed. If you don't see a constant perkulation of air bubbles it probably wouldn't hurt to replace the upper hose and see if the problem is resolved.

check the coolant level first! and change the thermostat if need be. sit in car until the temp. guage reads normal temp. if it is normal, and still no good heat. it is possibly the thermostat thats sticking. when changing coolant remember to bleed air from system while putting fluid in. it may also need a good flush. good-luck !! i live here in ny and today the wind chill is 8 below zero.

The key should work even if there is no battery in vehicle. Have you tried both doors (or all doors with locks) Do you live where the temp is below freezing - could be frozen shut or locks frozen?

1998 Cheverolet Lumina, ''service engine soon'' and hard gear shift

I doubt the two problems are connected. I would try a new gas cap and see what happens since it runs fine. The service engine soon light won't reset on it's own right away.

first of all not sure where you are but I can see it is colder there then where I am in Michigan first of all make sure your battery is fully charged and the second thing if there is a place where you can get a heated oil dip stick plug it in and it will help the engine with the cold start also put some dry gas in the gas tank as well but if all this fails and you can get it started with a jump and get it running while it is running take the positive side of the battery cable off and if the car dies again then it could be the alternator
