Question about 2000 Chevrolet S-10

1 Answer

Intermettent shut-offs Occasionally and ONLY when the gas tank is less than half full,my truck will just shut off. It happens sometimes at driving speed and sometimes when pulling off from a stop light. When this happens I can always re-start the truck after a couple tries and then continue on my way. It will not happen again for a few miles and then shut off again. After pulling off to the side of the road I can re-start it and then keep driving. If my gas tank if half full or completely full I never have the shut-off problem. What could be causing this erratic behavior? Fuel pump? Please help me with this aggravating problem.

I am having the same problem. I checked the fuel pump, replaced the fuel pressure regulator and also replaced the thermostat. the truck does not do this on every trip but does it out of the blue. the other day I was driving home from work and it died at the first stop light I came to which was less than a mile, so the engine didn't even have a chance to get to operating temp. the truck always starts back up but dies again a few miles or sometimes feet later. the more it dies the less it wants to start. It died on me about 15-20 times in a 24 mile trip and the last time it almost did not start again.Prior to having this problem I had the computer read by an obd III and it showed mass air flow sensor code and multiple rapid missfires in #3 and #5 cylinders. I cleaned the sensor and clrd the miss and now the truck is dieing again out of the blue. sorry I have no solution but hopefully someone will give both of us some help in the right direction. Oh by the way me truck is a 2000 s-10 zr -2 4.3 liter.

I Have a 2000 S10 with 2.2 flex fuel.It start shutting down at a half a tank Now at 3/4 of a tank. The truck so far will restart but some time it takes a couple of times.Had code readed but no code showed up.Changed fuel filter, spark plugs, air filter, and plug wires.still does it.I have noticed that it runs a little rougher or less power before it happens.

I also have the same problem of unexplained dying. I have a 1996 full size Chevy truck with a 305 Vortek, with a 5 speed. The manual transmission sometimes keeps the engine turning long enough to restart. Sometimes not. I have found no rhyme nor reason for this. One of the last times it died I had someone with me to turn the starter while I trouble shot. I found a good spark, but no fuel in throttle body. It then started and I drove home. I replaced the fuel pump assembly. I'm still holding my breath.

Most of the time when the engine shuts off, but only when you have a partial tank of fuel, the system is sucking air between the fuel pick-up and the pump (internal) or somewhere along the fuel pick-up tube (external). Either way you're going to have to drop the tank to fix it. Been there, done that!

Why did it shut off while I was driving?

Change the tank gas cap. When it is clogged, vacuumbuilds in the tank; this prevents the gas flow to the engine.

Losing power when its below half full of gas

Pressure test the fuel system to measure the pressure regulator to ensure correct fuel pressure under all driving conditions. Do the test with a less than 1/2 full tank of fuel.

My car stoped running as if it were running out of gas but i have gas in it now it will only crank but not start it is a 92 BMW 320i

Has the fuel filter ever been replaced? Instructions are here.
This car has two gas tanks, one on either side of the spare. The fuel pump that delivers fuel to the engine is on the right-hand side. When the left tank is less than half full, it requires a transfer pump to move the rest of the fuel over to the tank with the fuel delivery pump.
Those transfer pumps sometimes fail, or can simply come loose. When that happens, the car 'runs out of gas' though it still technically is one quarter full of fuel. It cannot access the rest of its fuel. This happened on my bosses '03 325 a few months ago.
If this is the problem, you can be sure to keep it more than half full of fuel until you can get it in to get it fixed.

1992 Volvo 240 sedan Sometimes Sputters when driving, and sometimes will stall. If I get out and shake it, it will start back up. Then check engine light comes on. Will drive fine for a few day's before...

could be the fuel computer under the dashboard. Could also be the electric pump in the tank. If you are lucky, as is often the case, it is not the pump, but the little rubber hose attached to that pump in the tank. Your car has 2 pumps, one in the tank, a submersible sending pump. The other is the main fuel pump under the hood. The tank one is easier to swap. There is an inspection plate in the trunk. You lift it out and then pull the unit by twisting the bung. I suspect the problem is here due to the fact you mention keeping it half full.

When making a turn my car shut off

If it happens with half a tank of gas or less its the fuel pump. Taking a turn will shift the gas and a weak pump will have a hard time sucking up the gas. Simple fix. Two metal straps with one bolt each will drop your gas tank and its pretty self explanatory after that.
