My 89 pickup is cutting out when you give it gas driving , also sometimes it will die when at idle , i have replaced fuel pump , fuel filter , coil , control mod , cap , rotor and plugs all new . sometimes it will restart with no problem , if i hold gas pedel wide open it will start and sometimes it wont start untill it sits . can you just try this, remove gas tank cap and go for a run with it off, see if its any better. if you can put one of them fake gas tank caps on with the filters, if it runs better then the breather in the cap is blocked. or the breather for the tank is blocked.
check fuel pump pressure- fuel filter --air filter --egr valve if carboned up clean or replace and cat converter feel the exhaust if feels restricted may be clogging up
Could be a problem with the pickup coil in the bottom of the distributor if equipped. The pickup coil provides the crank signal for the injectors and ignition module. Did you clear the code and then 53 came back ? On most models code 53 means the computer or one of the components is getting over 13 volts.
There usually is a strainer in the gas tank. After 23 years, anything is possible. If you have a carburetor, replace it, or have it cleaned. If fuel injected, the big hose from the air filter could be damaged and shifting loose. If the engine doesn't see the right vacuum, it won't work right. Check all the little vacuum lines. Get a vacuum gauge, learn how to use it. Do a fuel flow test to see if your tank is clogged.
