Well those jeeps are funny little critters when it comes to the battery terminals believe it or not if the battery terminals get to corroded it will crank most of the time and usually start but wont idle i would clean terminals real good and and charge it up real good and try it but like i said they usually at least start in ur case i would check the grounds and also u say it is a 1998 jeep cherokee is it a grand cherokee with a 4.0 straight 6 cause they usually have a coil pack for each cylynder mounted under a ignition module bolted on the head

also ignition module may b at fault but my money is on the batt or a bad ground if all hat happened is the battery got ran down

01 dodge dakota 3.9. no power to coil replaced engine control relay still no power can jump across relay get power but no start and get code for no rpm

If you're getting a code for no RPM, the PCM is not receiving a signal from the crankshaft position sensor. The PCM uses the signal from the crankshaft position sensor to fire the coil/spark plugs. Check the wiring to the crankshaft position sensor and check the sensor itself.

this comes from the electronic ignition and the distributer dc setting on a multimeter

check inside the distributer that the little magnet is still in place on the rotor and that the sensor is outputing pulses as it turns over
{you can use a meter set to AC range for this ...}
pull a plug out and place its metal to ground check for actual sparks

Toyota manual

Please check:
- If it is distributor type ignition system replace the distributor cap, rotor, ignition coil or ignition module from inside the distributor assembly. If it is distributor less ignition system then check the following items:
- Engine coolant temperature sensor.
- Fuse link in the engine bay fuse box.
- All the wires and connectors at the spark plugs.
- Crankshaft position sensor.
- Camshaft position sensor.
- Battery voltage at terminal #1,
- IGF signal (ignition confirmation signal) at terminal #2 with DSO.
- ( IGT) Ignition timing signal) at terminal #3 with DSO.
- Ground at terminal #4.
NOTE: Remove the connector from igniter #1 and see the female connector from the front side. The left most is the #1 and the right most is the #4 pin.

Are you getting power to the coil on the dark green wire with the orange stripe? The relay must have power to the coil and also to the contact. If yes, then problem might be with the crankshaft position sensor.
