Code only available from VW Dealer. They will look your vehicles VIN# up and it will give you origonal code.

VIN# is a seventeen digit number on the B pillar sticker ( Door striker post.) and under the glass of the windshield on the left lower edge visible from outside of the car.

If radio has been replaced, you need to pull the radio to read the serial number on the paper sticker at back of radio .

Take your proof of ownership with you .

Abs light stays on and i need to know how to do the clutch on a 2oo1 passat a good friend needs vw help we are a front end shop and there are no good shops to fix these things . also has check engine light...

ABS sensor or sensors have failed , cost about $40 each and need to have a reset done on a VW coded laptop.

Quite a big undertaking putting a clutch in a Passat not to be tackled lightly and without workshop facilities

With 172K miles the whole car must be on the edge of the cliff , think you are due to part company with it or dig very deep into your pockets for a fix

VW P421 code

This is a common problem with V6 Passats. VW put out a TSB on this a few years ago.
The code is telling you that your catalytic converter (driver's side, I think) is bad. It's more than likely not bad.

VW put out a TSB on this a few years ago. TSB 05-13. The cause of the error code is basically an over sensitive ECU (computer of car/engine) and the fix is to have your ECU flashed with the latest and greatest software. Depending on your mileage they might do it under warranty - you'll have to check.

It's still possible that it might be a bad catalytic converter - and the dealership might try to tell you that either way. Call VW (1-800-822-8987) and ask them about the TSB (I couldn't find it online).

Tell the dealership you want the ECU flashed - it's much much cheaper than a cat. No sense replacing it if it's not bad
There is a federal warranty on catalytic converters - 8 yrs or 80k miles...

Hope this helps!
