First of all it's normal for a car to change down a gear or two when slowing down, and if it doesn't go back into gear then you will need to check the transmission fluid to see if its needs topping up.

Ignition troubles

unplug connector at ignition switch, bridge terminal 30 [battery power] on connector and terminal 50 power to starter solenoid. engine should turn over. plastic ignition switch can wear and not make contact. at times the lug on ignition barrel that turns the switch breaks off.

Holden Viva- Automatic transmission troubles.

Hey mate, Had exactly the same problem. Suggest you take the car to your local auto transmission repair centre (not holden) and they can check the electrical diagnostics - if it the Transmission inhibitor Switch (as it was on mine - if so should cost you no more than 1 hour labour and about $75 - $95 for the switch.

its possible your clutch cable got stretched out. if you are lucky, your car came with an adjustable cable stock, and the slack can be picked up, it not, the cables arent too expensive, and with a little work, you could install it yourself. but its not the most fun job.

have your friend sit in the car and push the clutch pedal, and measure how far the little arm connected to the tranny (that will move up and down when the clutch pedal is pushed and let out). it should move almost an inch at least.(generally) some cars if the clutch is worn enough dont require it to move quite as far.

Is sluggish and has a hard time shifting

Major vacuum leak.
Check the vacuum diagram that is printed on a sticker under the hood.
Most importantly, check the big vacuum hose connected to the brake booster. Look for a disconnected hose and missing hose clamp.
There is also a vacuum modulator on the side of the transmission. the vacuum hose is disconencted or the diaphragm inside the modularoe is ruptured. ($20 AutoZone).
