I have a 1992 chevy cavalier with about 150,000 miles. It occasionally stalls out when i put it in gear. After i re-start it it seems to rev fine but as soon as i put it back in gear it stalls out again. I have changed the fuel filter and done a basic tune up but the problem pops up every once in a while. After letting it sit a few day i might be able to hop in and drive it for a few week without having the problem re-ocur.

Hi f1
im dave
if thats all it does i wouldnt get rid of it .
does it stall out at idle or while driving?
while cold or hot?
there are many possibilities.
but a common problem on these 3.1s is the IAT motor or idle control motor attaching to the throttle body.

Hi, I had this happen to me a year or so ago. The mechanics said it was the IAC valve, it ran ok after they replaced it. Of course now I have a whole other set of problem with this stupid car :-(

I have a somewhat similar problem, my lumina ATV (the minivan) randomly loses most of its power. i have no idea what causes it, it happens when in or out of gear, hot or cold. while driving it feels like shifting from 2nd to 5th on a manual. please help.

I have a 1992 chevy lumina 3.4L engine and I had to replace the starter. I am putting the starter in and I need to know how many wires to hook up? My dad thinks there's a wire missing.

Dual overhead cam (euro)?

the small purple wire will go to the small terminal on the starter. there should be 3-4 other wires that attached to the large terminal of the starter.

What causes chugging?

Sounds like bad fuel, clogged/blocked fuel filter, air filter maint. of the vehicle needed (may need tune up) or internal engine problems. You have to start with the basics. How many miles, how well was the vehicle maintained etc. Cars usually don't just break with no notice.

92 lumina apv stalls after sitting short time

here are some signs of a bad fuel pressure regulator: the vehicle runs rough, the engine will not start(usually in morning) MANY TIMES ENGINE STARTS BUT STALLS SHORTLY AFTER STARTING. a bad regulator can result in fouled spark plus, and fuel milage will decrease noticeably. the only cure is to replace regulator. what makes it fail usually it gets a tear in the diafram and it cant maintain fuel pressure. hope this helps toolman,

Car stalls

the problem sounds like it is not getting enough of fuel. check or replace fuel filter to see if this helps, also make sure fuel pump is pumping the fuel at the right pressure. have pressure checked if need be. if not enough fuel a vehicle will run at idle, but stall under pressure.

93 chevy lumina euro won't stay running

if you can check for spark when it wont start and fuel pressure and the service port , would be great information , otherwise pattern failure is ignition module and crank sensor (replace them as a set) , after cools off it will run again.

When's the lst time a major tune up was complete? You may just need some maintenance. When I say major I mean the following Spark plugs, wires, air filter, fuel filter, pcv vlave, check the EGR valve and replace if needed, and inspect/replace drivebelt(if needed). I had an EGR clog on mine and it would lose alot of power, sometimes stall. Also check that your fuel injectors are working proply. You should have a nice cone spray of fuel coming out. You will also want to make sure that your spark plugs are correctly gapped. Your local auto supply store should be able to tell you the correct gap.
Hope this helps.
