The back latch is electric release. It's a fuse under the dash. I forget which one, but it's not the door lock fuse. Just pull everyone and you'll find it.
Sounds like the actuator is working, but one of the rods has come disconnected from either the actuator or the latch. You will have to remove the upper door interior panel to gain access to these parts. If you are VERY careful, you may be able to remove it without damaging it, but you may end up having to get a replacement panel (Try your local salvage yard). The rods come from the factory with a plastic clip holding them into the socket. These deteriorate over time and allow the rod to pop out when the hatch is closed (Especially if it is slammed). Once you have the door open, you can reconnect the rod using a clip like the one pictured below, or by using a piece of "safety" wire attached through existing hole in the door panel to keep the rod in place.
