Similar problem with the 98 I just bought. Low fuel light came on with a qtr tank for gas along with the check engine light. Got gas for the very first time and made sure the gas cap was tight before and after getting gas...it was. Car still runs smooth but any idea what would cause the light to come on? O2 sensors? How many are there? Thx!

Seems like everything that could possibly go wrong with a car hit me recently. It all began when my check engine light came on. Weeks later my convertible top just stopped in mid air! I thought I would die. I found that I had a busted hydrolic hose in the convertible roof. Just had the hose replaced and the light went off. Something to check in to because the hydrolic fluid leaked out and ruined my leather headliner and that is another expense I could do without right now.

Bmw 3 series electrical faults

Hi sounds like the same problem I had crankshaft sensor my battery light came on and the engine would cut out sometimes would start straight away other times took 5mins to start again.
But would get a garage to check fault codes costs about 40pound but could save you 100's as it may be a faulty alternator/battery.

Having the same problem the other guy described.

First of all, these codes are what are called "Powertrain Trouble Codes' (that's what the "P" means P=Powertrain). TCM Request (Transmission Control Module = TCM). The request was to turn on the 'Check Engine" light.
P0720 - output speed sensor circuit malfunction
P0715 - Input speed sensor (turbin speed) circuit malfunction
P0442 - Evaporative Emission System Leak (Small Leak)
P0455 - Evaporative Emission System Leak (Large Leak)
Check fuel filler cap problems - for Evap Emiss leaks
Replace the pulse generators & have the trans fluid replaced/flushed.
The Main Catalyst System Efficiency Bank 1 Is P0420, not P0442
If you had P0420 code, the catalytic converter is shot... and that's an expensive component.

99 jetta check engine light on, runs fine, speedometer not workin

o2 sensors will put your check-engine-light on. it is attached to the exhaust (closest to the motor)and rusts-out sometimes. you could try to fix it by buying the o2 sensor and use a socket-set to see if it loosens. i 'm not a mechanic but have had the issue, in the past, with the jetta II's and a 1997.the guys at vw dealers are great with info, if your a hands-on kinda guy/girl.

Turn on your headlights and check to see if your taillights are working. They act as a fuse to your dashlights, its a safety thing
