1996 GMC 1500, rear parking lights do not work, brake lights work with parking light switch off but not on. Have power to rear driverside parking light but not passenger side.

try to jump the brake light switch if that does not work check for power at switch if no power and fuse is ok may need new turn sinal switch if you have power at switch and when you jump it you have no lights check at the rear for power if you have power check ground

Do you have power in and out of the brake light switch ? It could be the turn signal switch if you do.

check the bulbs first if ok check for power if none .change the brake light switch.

There is a switch on the brake pedal, stick your head under the dash and follow the brake pedal up, you should see the switch pressed against a bracket, unplug the wires, one goes to the lights and the other should be live when the ignition is on, bridge the wires if the lights comes on then it needs a new switch, if there is power there and they still don't come on, check the bulbs?

Light gets power from brake light switch/.May be switch got shorted an brake light getting non-stop power causing it not to turn OFF brake light.

Get the brake light switch checked. Check volt at brake light switch.

It can be faulty brake light switch causing the problem or its wiring short for switch.

The front park lights work correct? If the front park lights work than there is not a problem with the light switch since the brown wire from the switch supplies power to the front park lights, front side markers, and the rear taillights. There should be twelve volts on the brown wire from the headlight switch with the connector plugged in and the park lights turned on. If this is true that there is a problem with the wiring to the back of the vehicle. A thorough inspection of the harness should reveal the problem. The dim break and blinkers support the above. High resistance also know as corrosion, in the wires or connections would cause this problem.

Look up under dash where brake pedal pivots, you should see a switch that is activated by pedal arm.
