Blows out? Probably a head gasket. they don't always blow white smoke. Parts store sell a kit to check exhaust in the reservoir or radiator. Best bet. If it blows out, Fill it with water, leave the cap off. Start it and put your hand over the reservoir opening. You feel any pressure being cold. Head gasket.
So you have an overheating problem. Check the coolant level in the radiator, check for coolant leaks with engine running (fill radiator if necessary), check temperature of upper rad. hose as engine gets hot (this checks for thermostat operation). Could also be a clogged radiator, bad fan clutch, or blown head gasket.
Do a Google search and also look on Ebay. Might take more than 1 day of looking since items change constantly. If you have any nearby wrecking yards look there too. I think 96, 97, 98 and maybe 99 share the same headlight assembly.
The fan on a 1996 Acura RL will normally run for a short period after the engine is shut off if the temperature sensor determines the engine is too hot. However, if it is running constantly and not shutting off after you shut off your engine, then you will need to replace the fan relay. It is most likely stuck in a closed position. If your fan does shut off after running for a period of time when you shut off the engine but you have a noisy fan, then most likey the fan bearings are wearing out and it is more cost-effective to replace the whole fan.
