My 2000 Ford Explorer is doing the same thing. My check engine comes on and goes off now and then, and when I am just pushing the gas is when it starts jerking (bucking) but when I am getting on it, it really didn't do it as much but is now doing it more and more. Also in the morning when I first start out and take my foot off of the gas to slow down and then push back on the gas it feels like it wants to stall and jerks a bit till I get going. We checked the plugs and plug for the 6 cylinder keeps going bad. I mean the white part is burning right off, when we replace the plug it runs great for like 10-15 miles and starts acting up again cause the plug goes bad that soon. My dad thinks it is the fule pump for that cylinder so we are going to try that this weekend. I will let you know if it works.

At highway speed, as the car transitions from a set speed to slight deceleration (slight easing off the gas pedal) or from a hard deceleration (foot completely off the gas pedal) to a very slight...

sounds like your egr valve is opening too far at part throttle and sticking open. it is actuated by solenoids that open and let engine vacuum in. you were on a good path in checking the vacuum lines. however this may require replacing the egr valve and gasket. the egr valve is circular in shape on top and usually is bolted down with two bolts. its located on the engine side facing the firewall.

When maitaining speed (light pressure on the accellerator) it bucks and hesitates intermitantly

You can try one thing and you may need to go to Autozone or Oreillys for a free scan and to reset the "check engine" light.

Disconnect the EGR valve and plug the Vacuum line then take it on a short run to see if the problem stopped. Sometimes the Solenoids which supply vacuum to the EGR will not make good connections internally and this will cause the engine to buck. Reattach the line and try replacing the Solenoid if this helps.

You also have a fuel pressure regulator on the injected models. It can be giving your problems. When you try using this site, please include the Year, Model, and possibly the engine type. Also if you have a Code or Codes from a scanner test, please include those results.

Some of the Mechanics here may know of Recalls for certain problems. Thanks for using this site and I hope my solution helps you.

Engine light came on in my dodge caravan sxt 3.3L 6cyl. Code P0404. It seems to be running fine, how do I check the EGR valve myself? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

To check the egr yourself you will need a hand held vacuum pump. To perform the test start the van and let it warm-up, then remove the top vacuum hose from egr valve and attach hand vacuum pump to egr valve. Apply about 5 in-hg vacuum to the egr valve. With the engine at idle speed and vacuum applyed the engine idle speed will drop or stall. If not then the egr valve is faulty and will need to be replaced. If the engine didi change idle speed and or stalled the egr valve is good. Hope this will help you.

The check engine light for my 2005 Dodge Grand Caravan is on. The engine is a 3.8 V6 engine. The error code that it is displaying is P0406 or EGR issue. It is my understanding when you have an issue with...

I would clear the code and see if it returns. If the EGR valve is stuck open, it would make it buck or shutter. If the EGR valve is not functioning right, or clogged up, it will effect proformance. I would replace the EGR valve. I read that it's a common problem.

How do i replace the egr valve sensor

The Vehicle would only stop, if the EGR stuck open, momentary at low speed, and dumped too much exhaust into the intake. The entire EGR Valve ,if bad, needs to be changed. The sensor is part of it. Have her find a good shop or a friend do it at home. Pretty easy.
I served in Viet Nam-so take it slow, and be safe

Code on diagnostics p0401

Code on diagnostics p0401:

What is going on?
Exhaust Gas recirculation low flow detected means that: there is vacuum problem in the EGR system - between the combustion chamber, EGR valve (mechanical - blown up diaphragm or clogged airlets/hoses) , EGR Modulator Valve (mechanical - blown up diaphragm, dirty EG/air filter or clogged airlets/hoses) and Vacuum Switching Valve ((mechanical - blown up diaphragm or clogged airlets/hoses OR electrical - VSV not properly synchronizing with the ECM, for instance).

Effects?
This causes the combustion chamber temperature to increase and produce Oxides of Nitrate (NOx) that is out of an acceptable emission range. This triggers the Malfunction Light (check engine light) to stay on (after a couple of driving cycles)!
Solution: Focus on EGR airways (hoses...) and organs (EGR valve, EGR Modulator, VSV), clean, check or replace the defected one. VSV seems to be criticale as it plays electrical & mechanical function. Once the repair is done, Clear the P0401 code using an OBII scanner.
