Question about 1995 Ford Explorer

Won't start Plenty of spark but no fuel. Gas tank is full. I also noticed that the electric fuel pump did not come on when I turned the ignition on. Where is the electric fuel pump located on a 4.0L V6? Thanks, Lee

I was driving my car and it backfired, and has not cranked since. it turns over but will not start was told it could be a electronic probelm. what could it be.


It could be gas or spark (ignition system). To find out why it won't start, you have to start checking. Does your fuel pump turn on? Turn the key to on,. not start. There should be a buzz or hum from the gas tank that lasts about 2 or 3 seconds. That is the pump inside the tank and it will put pressure in the gas line and put gas up to the engine. The pump is electrical. If you do not hear it come on, you will need the fuel pump circuit tested to find the problem.

If you do hear the pump, then you need to check ignition system: check for spark on a spark plug wire. If you are not sure how, then get someone to help you who knows how, because you need two people anyway- one to watch for spark and one to be cranking the engine over with the key. If you do have spark, a strong blue spark, maybe the injector circuit needs checked. The fuel pump puts gas up to the engine, and the injectors put gas inside the engine.
If you don't have spark on any spark plug wire, then the ignition system is the problem. This is pretty complex and needs electrical testing to find the problem with it. Post back if you have questions. Good luck.

Car won' start, battery is ok, antifreeze is low but not out could this be the problem?


No. it wouldn't keep it from starting. If the engine cranks but won't start, probably gas or spark (ignition) related. Do you hear the fuel pump in the tank turn on for a couple of seconds, when turning key to on, not start? If you cannot hear the pump, better check if you are getting gas up to the engine. Maybe the fuel pump quit, or the pump circuit needs looked at. The pump should briefly turn on with key on to pressurize the fuel system-the fuel line and the fuel rail where the injectors are. Then the pump will turn off, and only come back on again when the engine is cranking, and stay on when running.
Correct fuel pressure is important for easy starting, and good engine performance. Have the fuel pressure checked against the specification for your vehicle. If fuel pressure is good, check the ignition system-check for spark.

check to see if the cam shaft is turning while cranking the engine (broken timing belt) run fault codes to find faulty sensors.

Sudden no starts are usually gas or ignition related. That's why the mantra check for spark and check for gas. If you check for spark at a spark plug and have a blue snapping spark, the ignition is probably good. To check for gas, best to check fuel pressure, as high fuel pressure against the injectors ensures that proper amount of gas will be sprayed out by the injectors. Do you hear the fuel pump buzz on for a couple of seconds when the key is turned to on? If not, try banging on the bottom of the gas tank to see if pump will work. If it does, you will need to replace the pump-may work a couple more times by tapping on the tank, but the pump is basically gone.
If gas and spark is present, one would next need to check the injector circuit.
If spark is absent or weak, it could be the crank position sensor, ignition control module (under the coil pack), cam position sensor, or the pcm.

I have a 98 Camaro I put a fuel pump in fuel filter an my car still won't start.Do thank the gas line clog up?


If you know for a fact the pump is getting power and ground, and nothing is coming out of the line before the filter, then yes the line could be clogged up.

If this is a sudden occurrence and nothing suspicious happened prior, you most likely lost either gas or spark to the engine. You need to check for both.

Do you hear the fuel pump in the gas tank buzz on for a couple of seconds when you turn the ignition key to ON? Unless the fuel pump turns on and puts gas under high pressure at the fuel injectors, the engine cylinders won't get gas to start. Correct fuel pressure is crucial to know if you have a fuel pump (or fuel filter) problem. If the pressure is correct, it is probably not a fuel problem but a spark problem, although there are less common instances where a fuel injector circuit may malfunction.

The ignition system not producing spark at the spark plugs is the other common problem of no starts. Buy a cheap spark tester at a parts store, plug it into one of your spark plug wires, then crank the engine over and watch for a strong blue spark. You might need a helper to do this. If you see a consistent spark, the ignition system is probably good, although you should probably check more than just one plug wire-sometimes one bad ignition coil in a coil pack will cause no starting. I have an 92 metro. It was running fine. I turned it off and couldnt get it started the next morning. It turns over, just wont start.


Is it out of gas? Is the ignition wiring still in place for the Spark plugs and distributor? If so is it getting spark? Is it getting fuel? {it is one of these problems}

The electric Fuel pump should hum when you turn on the ignition before you try to turn it over. Do you hear it underneath the back end of the vehicle in the gas tank? It also might be the solenoid for that pump, but isn't the most likely thing. The pumps are $90-$110 and are immersed in the fuel.

The next thing to check is the fuel filters. One is the big can next to the tank underneath the vehicle, and the other may be in the engine compartment.

The spark may be disrupted by a damaged distributor rotor or cap. The little end burns off the gap in the rotor after alot of driving eventually. It's easy to notice by visual inspection.

After that, look to see if the engine has blown. Is there a hole in the block from a paiton connecting rod sticking out of the engine? Did it run out of oil?

But the most likely thing is the fuel pump.

turn your key on, DO NOT TOUCH THE GAS PEDAL and start, good luck. Pumping the pedal doesn't do a thing for fuel injection. In thre days of carburetors and you had control of your own property, Pumping did a couple of things. It set the choke and added more fuel. But that was yesterday and yesterday's gone.
