On 2 seperate occasions about 2 weeks apart driving along in 2 wheel drive a loud clunk noise followed by a grinding noise for about 10seconds and then a loud clunk noise again and then it goes away. There is no odor when this happens and does not seem to effect the drive train but does seem to be coming from the front end. It is a 2005 F150 FX4 perhaps the sound of gears meshing? ANY THOUGHTS ON WHAT IT COULD BE??? Thanks

sounds like gears binding or something but transfer case hase been rebuilt?
the ford ranger does not make a clunking sound but a ringing sound when the car is in motion coming from the front end and when i go over small rocks it seems like the tire is sliding.
