Yes, a coil is a possible cause, and so is a relay or other electrical component.
You need to figure out if you have lost fuel pressure or spark when it stops running to know what to look for.

Starter grinding on 87 f-150 with the 4.9 strait six and c-6 trans. done put 4 starters does it need shiming

You can't shim Ford starters. First check to make sure you're getting correct starter... Ford 6's have a couple different "noses"/inputs - some actually extend further in. So check to make sure you're getting the correct part from your source. If it is correct part, you're going to have to replace flywheel. Also before putting in starter, check the flywheel for "burrs" - tiny metal particles left behind from old starter on flywheel. Almost like metal shavings between teeth of flywheel.

1984 Ford F-150 replacing the starter?

The starter is the next logical choice to swap, but make sure that you have checked all of the connections on your battery and solenoid, and that your charging system is working well enough that your battery is fully charged. If you pull on your head light switch, and then try to start the car, the lights should dim a bit, but not go out. Anyway, back to your starter. Remember to disconnect the negative terminal of your battery first. All it takes to change the starter is to disconnect the nuts that hold the wiring first, then take out the bolts tht mount the starter to the engine bell housing. Reverse the process to install, and hook up the battery terminal last....

Dose starter need shims

It all depends. Normally when you buy a replacement starter there is a piece of straight wire that comes with it that helps you to "gap" the tranny's fly wheel teeth to the starter's they mesh properly.

Are you asking because you have flywheel damage on the transmission side or are you having starter problems?

I have a 2004 F-150 5.4 and I need to know if the flywheel is messed up or if it's something else. It's making a loud scraping/grinding noise around the flywheel, more so when I accelerate.

Take off Trans Dust cover and inspect, See if there is any damage to the Trans dust cover? See if starter has to be shimmed? See if the starter is sticking in the fly wheel, which will grind like crazy, if it does stick.?
