1999 jeep Grand cherokee

I get an intermittent loud metallic knocking from the engine but difficult to determine where from. Stops when in 'park' and sometimes when you take foot off accelerator and may not happen for 5 miles. Sometimesit is more persitent - any ideas?

I was told by my Jeep mechanic today that the loud knocking noise is a rod & that I need to replace the engine. On further talking to him, his wife that works in his office, recalled that there have been 2 other 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokees come in with the same problem. No engine warning lights & all gauges reading normal. I know that if this has happened here it is happening more. My e-mail is cyndee_g@comcast.net

My 4.0 lt 97 jeep cherokee does this too.The sound is like a sick lifter and lessens as the revs are raised above 1500 rpm.Sometimes the sound is not evident for several days. The jeep has travelled 169000 km.

Same problem as Cyndee G. Gauges read normal, knocking noise with metal sound. I was advised that my Jeep would need a new engine.

Its a bad rod bearing. I worked at a jeep dealer for a few years and its common. Not that jeep will say there is a problem. However I wil tell you that the engine can last a day or a year makin that noise mine did it for 4 years lol. I put lucas engine oil treatment in it too....Seemed to help. Also know someone who used castrol oil but a thin grade like 5w20. the thinner oil is able to get between the beaing and the rod better thus quiting the noise...

Intermittent wipers not functioning properly on 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Does it have the rain sensor (behind the mirror). Sometimes the rain sensor module comes loose.
Otherwise probably the wiper motor, which has the park limit switch in it, needs to be replaced.

Loud knocking in motor and battery will not stay charged on 97 grand Jeep

Loud knocking noise like metal clashing, ran car with no oil,Big hole on the side of the block, all these come to mind. But maybe its just the drive belt that turns the alternator to charge the battery or the water pump bearing not allowing the drive belt to turn appropriately to charge the battery. Inspect the drive belt.

I have 2004 jeep and back electric window will not go up. also, everytime i go over a bump in road i have a loud knocking sound in the front end.

Loud knocking may be due to a broken front sway bar end link, common problem on Grand Cherokees. Rear window not going up could be a bad window motor, switch or wiring. Those will have to be checked out to determine exactly what it is.

My engine was knocking so I thought I just needed an oil change. After $200 for good oil change, transmission flush and new oil, transverse case flush, it still knocked. In fact on that same day, it got...

first find out where the oil came from, if its from the filter whoever replaced it is liable, if its a hole in the side of the engine then it threw a rod and you are out of luck, let me know what you find

'99 jeep grand cherokee v6 loose rod in engine

Likely you need more than one (not rod, but rod bearings) In most cases you get knocking noise and low oil pressure as symptoms. If caught early you can do this in-car otherwise engine needs crankshaft and all bearings as well as new pump and system flush.

If you have a connecting rod problem, likely it is not the rod itself that has failed, rather, the crankshaft bearing on that rod or the wristpin. Usually though when either has failed, the knocking is an all the time thing, varying with engine rpm. A good tech can usually tell the difference between the two just by listening. A beraing failure is generally also accompanied by a drop in engine oil pressure as well. not so for a wristpin. An intermittent noise (tapping) can also indicate a valve lifter problem... though a lifter can also make noise during a low oil pressure situation. Lifter noise is heard from the top of the engine, both other noises are from underneath.
I would first have a different shop give you a second opinion. If it turns out to be a rod bearing, generally this damages the crankshaft and also sends bearing material throughout the entire engine. To properly repair would require complete teardown and rebuild, or replacement of engine. This does not hold true for lifter or wristpin problems, unless severe, though either can be expensive, even if you do the job yourself..
How long is your powertrain warranty?
Definitely get a second opinion before doing anything else!
