Question about 1997 Chevrolet Lumina

Hard to start

My daughters 97 lumina is hard to start, it takes 15 or 20 minutes of turning the engine over before it will start, it takes patience but most of the time it will start before the battery goes dead, Once started it runs fine until she stops somewhere and turns it off, and then it's back to many attempts to get it to start again, not sure to check fuel supply or ignition problem, what should i check first, any simple or easy things to check first before i go to the high expence of taking it to a garage!

the plugs appear to be in good condition, I cleaned and re gapped them, the problem still exists, what should my next step be.

I had the same problem with my '97 Lumina and suffice it to say that it took a long time to determine the cause & I'm not sure we're out of the water yet! I replaced the battery, spark plugs, starter and had new keys made thinking the computer chip was worn down. While having an oil change done, my mechanic found the belt tensioner ready to fall apart which it did once he removed it. He explained that without the correct tension on the belt, the alternator did not work properly, in turn causing more duress on the battery, leading to its demise. The car has run great since the tensioner was replaced (about 3 months ago), but just broke down 3 days ago after the "volts" light stayed on & I tried to limp it home. My mechanic will look at it in the next day or so , but friends tell me its probably the alternator which was replaced about a year prior to the problems I had which are similar to yours. Don't know if this is any help or not; seems I'm still looking for the "missing electrical link."

I have a '98 Lumina 3.1 with simillar symtoms... It has a freshly rebuilt starter and altenator, new tensioner and a new battery... Not fun stuff to buy or replace for an older high mileage heep...This morning its like -25 and I couldnt get it started, It also seems sluggish on hills or when pedal's down 3/4 of the way...tried using fuel line additives to clean injectors...
so my next step is to follow the advice of gmgoodwrench and change the fuel filter...

I own a 1990 Chevrolet lumina. I had the same problem, it can easily be fixed by changing the fuel filter. If this does not solve the problem you might have some water in your gas tank. ><

97 chevy lumina won't turn over but lights work. Makes a click sound and thats it.

You need a new battery-
It takes a great deal more power to crank a motor than it does to light up the lights. This is why your lights still come on even though the battery does not have enough power crank the engine over. If you install a new battery keep an eye on it...if it dies quickly then you have a bad alternator.

97 Lumina. Two weeks ago had oil change. At that time, mechanic stated that coolant was low and discolored. He flushed the system at that time. This past week,my low coolant light came on. Checked tank and...

take the spark plugs out and fill the water up. turn over the engine. see what comes out of the spark plug holes. should just be fuel. smell. you will need some one to turn the engine over and have good charge in the battery. fill the water to the top so it is level. if you see the water go down when the engine is turning. then it could be air or a leak in the head gasket.

1995 Chevy Lumina has a hard time starting up in hot and cold weather after vehicle sits over night, or for more than 3 to 4 hours, it take three to four turns of the key in the ignition before car starts,...

You may need a mechanic for this.
The strong gas smell and the hard starting could be connected.
You could have a leaking injector, or faulty pressure regulator. And you could have a fuel leak in the line.
A mechanic would do a visual inspection of the line from the tank to the engine, and check the cylinders for raw fuel when the engine is off.

We changed the battery in the 97 lumina and now the MFG alarm system is in a mode where we cannot get the car to start

Disconnect negative battery cable. With key still turned on hook the cable back up. Try starting car. If that doesn't work turn key on for ten minutes. Than try cranking it. Turn it on and off three different times with the ten minute intervals. After that if car doesn't start than leave the key on for thirty minutes than try cranking it. This should work.

97 lumina, 3.1. Starts runs smooth, drive for 30

I just recently have been fighting the same problem with the same make/model/year vehicle. For myself, I would drive off and on through the day and it would run fine. Then suddenly after a start it would run rough and die. I would have to wait 20 to 60 mins before it would start again. I had it checked and fuel pump was only putting out around 19 psi. It should be around 41 psi. Had fuel pump replaced and no more problems. Furthermore, now it runs so much better. It's funny how over time I didn't notice how the performance was slowly degrading. Unfortunaley fuel pumps for this car run around $300.
