Question about 1998 Chevrolet Prizm

Lately my 1982 Chverolet Corvette Collectors Edition with the 350 CI Cross Fire Injection Engine has been stalling and missing. I have change the Spark Plugs and have burned the fuel down to .75 gallon and refilled it with fresh fuel a bottle of heat and a bottle of Fuel Injector Cleaner and have run that through the engine and it still has the above symthoms. Please tell me what I should do to solve the problem. Thank you.

Crossfire injection systems are notorious for poor performance. Your solution is an expensive one. Your intake manifold has a sort of restriction in each port. I'm not sure what purpose these restrictions serve, but because of poor air/fuel circulation in the manifold, gasoline puddles on these flat spots after the engine has reach proper operating temperature. As a result, when you stop at a stoplight (for example), as the engine rev's down to idle, it begins to sputter and cough, and can eventually stall. The engine will not restart because it is flooded...the gasoline puddle has been sucked into the engine, and you'll need to wait for it to evaporate off.

To resolve this issue, you might want to replace the whole Crossfire system with one from a newer Camaro or Corvette (tuned port injection). If you REALLY want to make your Crossfire setup work, you'll need to remove your intake manifold and mill the flat spots off of the ports. Since this will change the way the air/fuel mixture enters your engine, you'll need to have your engine re-tuned for the new configuration.

From this chart - I think you may be misreading the number - 3970010 is possibly the actual number: Which makes the engine pretty old 68-72 350 V8 - 4 bolt main. I included past this number so that you can see that the number you posted doesn't actually exist. And thus my conclusion that the 9 is most likely a 0. Just did pressure test on My 350 ci 33oo 1995 corvette. Iwas told it was leaking water from intake manifold(overheated) What can you tell me about this ? Thanks Jim jimchbylds@aol.com


Intake manifold gaskets are a common place for a coolant leak. I have changed several of them because of this. It is common for them to leak to the exterior. They will also leak to the inside and then will cause internal engine damage. It is not generally a really expensive repair unless you have damage from overheating your engine.

Not sure I understand your question...the stock motor on the 1984 Corvette is the "Cross Fire Injected" 350 V-8...Hope this helps.

Engine shuts down anytime gas pedal is floored corvette is a 1982 crossfire.if you ease up on pedal engine then gains rpm as normal.idle is fine .seems as if when vacuum drops that is what causes it to...


Possible causes, and in an order of where to check first:

1.Fuel filter - Located along the Right frame rail, close to passenger door area.

2.Fuel pump - Located inside fuel tank.
[Electric fuel pump. Pressure should read between 9-13 PSI.
The Cross-Fire Injection unit, is in reality,
Two- Throttle Body Injection units. TBI. ]

3.Fuel strainer for fuel pump. ('Fuel sock')
Located in fuel tank, attached to fuel pump.
The fine mesh of this sock can become restricted over time, by 'sludge' that has built up in the bottom of the fuel tank.
(
'Sludge'. Dirt mixed with moisture that builds up inside a fuel tank. Additives for gasoline that also add to the sludge)

4.Air cleaner element. (Added, because many times this is overlooked by the owner, and can cause bogging down when accelerating hard, if severely dirty. Added as fourth in the list instead of First, but may be the First area to look)

5..Cross-Fire Injection System, (Twin Throttle Body Injection System)
This injection system is controlled by an ECM, (Engine Control Module)
This same ECM also controls the emissions system. (CCC. Close Coupled Catalysts)

It is for this reason, of interaction of the injection, emissions, and ignition systems, that only a qualified, professional technician can diagnose problems with the unit.

Computerized diagnostic equipment, along with the knowledge, and training required, is needed.

Your engine may look nice but the electronics on it absolutely don't like water. Unplug every connector and dry them out, one at a time and hope for the best. The entire system reads subtle changes in current...water will change those readings enough for the computer to get totally confused. Also, check inside the distributor cap...often water will steam off the engine and condense inside cap causing ignition system to cross-fire.
