How to stop timing chain rattle

Timing chain rattle is usually a result of a worn out or broken chain tensioner, although extremely high mileage can cause gear wear to cause it. Replacement of the timing set, to include the tensioner will certainly solve the problem. (Some engines have adjustable chain tension... you might investigate this as well).

I think you had better have a local shop inspect this for a failed engine connecting rod.

Can a timing chain be tightened on a 2003 sunfire? It's blowing black smoke, raps loudly when I start it then quiets down (but still raps) during idle. It also gets very loud during acceleration and...

Hi,

Timing chains cannot be tightened as such.

However, if you are experiencing chain "chatter", it is possible to reduce this noise by either:

- changing to correct viscosity engine oil
- replacing the chain "tensioner"
- Last resort: removing plastic chain guide inside timing cover (Note: only do this if it does not adversely affect the chain operation.

cheers,

When you first start it after sitting for 4to 5 hours it has a rattling noise behind the timing chain cover. when it warms up then the rattling goes away.tell me what it could be ...

This sounds like a tensioner or chain looseness issue. You need to open it up and see what is actually happening. The warm up quieting sounds like you are at the end of the life of the chain. It is also possible that some guide has broken.
You have to perform exploritory surgery, and proceed from there. If you need a new chain, replace all of the gears also, or suffer quick failure of new chain.

Looking for Timing Chain Guide

Check with Auto Zone if no...see the Dealer but also check the camshaft gear sprocket...if its composite you may need to replace it as well...this also causes chains to rattle and jump.

Mechanic replaced timing chain but rattling noise still happens. he said it could be the oil pump or the chain that runs the oil pump? was replacing the timing chain needed?

Replacing the timing chain is done around 100,000 miles, but can last as long as 200,000.
Sounds like something may be on its way out, and a rattle does indicate a chain. Not all oil pumps use chains...many use gears to spin the oil.
Most people know when it needs replacement when they are calling for a tow truck.
It could be your water pump as well. It is hard to tell where the sound comes from sometimes. A stethescope may help pin-point the sound to the part.
Good Luck!

2002 corolla (now 91000 miles) makes rattling sound

Thats good that you are getting a second opinion. A Toyota dealer will be able to check it and see what the noise may be. See what they come up with. I dont think a worn timing chain or guides would cause a low oil pressure problem. But, if it does indeed have low oil pressure, that is a serious problem.

During a cold start, I have a noisy rattle coming front the front of the engine on the low down side. This continues for about 10 seconds then quiets down. Any ideas? 1997 Nissan pu, 4 cylinder.

Sounds like a timing chain issue, eventually the tensioner builds enough pressure to quiet it. Also check all chain guides, they get damaged with chain noise like what you describe.

Hi there,
you will need new upper timing chain and sprockets. Common problem on altima your year. Nissan has TSB for it. First they had us remove the upper timing chain guide, but after that, they had us replace all top chain components.
