To check the trans fluid you have to have car on a lift or over a pit (like at oil change place) so it is level.

On the lower pass. side of trans. right near the rt. front drive axle there is a small plug (takes 7/16" wrench) Pull plug and fuild should run out W/ engine hot and running.

If you need to add there is a red cap on the driver side top of the trans right at the back of the engine. Unscrew cap and fill thru small hole.

Transmission gasket leaking

Very easy BUT messy to replace.. A filter and gasket kit is less than $20. Just remove all of the bolts on the transmission pan with a drain pan underneath... Replace the filter inside. Clean the pan and transmission surfaces and install with the new gasket. Do not use gasket sealer unless instructed to... Then re-fill with recommended fluid. Check fluid level with engine running.

Where is the dipstick to check the transmission fluid on a 1999 pontiac grand am 4 cyclinder engine

There should be a long diptick which reached to the bottom of the engine block, this is motor oil. The transmission dipstick is very long as well, and transmission fluid is red.

What kind of transmission fluid goes in a 1999 pontiac montana

Recommended GM DEXRON® VI, Low viscosity transmission fluid.
Note: make sure you don't over fill transmission and the Montana's transmission are know for failures due to high fluid retention caused by high viscosity transmission fluid from additives or dirty transmission oil and filter.
Thank you for using Fixya and good luck.

How much transmission fluid does a 1999 Grand Prix once I drop the pan and change the filter? Also, what kind of transmission fliud works best? Thanks

Transmission fluid does not have to deal with nearly the number of problems engine oil has to, with heat, water, acids, grit, etc., so it is not at all critical. In the old days, Ford always had a different fluid because they used different material for seals. But these days the all the fluids sold are great.

As to how much, that depends. There will only be about 4 quarts in the pan and transmission, but the total is more than twice that, and it can very anywhere in between, depending on how much fluid drains down from the torque convertor. It has a little flap that is supposed to stop drainage, but it always leaks down slowly anyhow. So there is never any set amount. You just have to estimate how much came out, put that much in to start, and keep checking and adding, with the engine running.

How many quarts of transmission fluid does it hold

You didn't state what size engine you have.
The 2.2 engine----- 6.9 qts.
The 2.3 engine-----7.4 qts.
The 2.4 is 7.4 qts.
The 3.1 is 7.4 qts.
The 3.4 is 6.9 qts.
These are the capacities for refilling after being drained.

I have a 1999 Pontiac Grand Am SE w/ 3.4 L V6 and a transmission that does not have a dip stick. I changed the transmission filter. Did not drain the torque converter (whether I was able to or not....

buy a new dipstick for that make and model. then fill to levels on dipstick do not overfill as you can blow seals on tranny.
shoukld be around 7 quarts

2001 Grand Am GT Tranmission Fliud Check

Hello Ryan Motes, my name is JShreader. Thank You for choosing

As the expert stated...This is a "Cased" Transmission. So you don't have a conventional "Dip-Stick". Instead, the Fluid is checked on the side of the Transmission via the Fluid Level Screw as shown on the picture below...The fluid level screw is intended to be used for diagnosing a transaxlefluid leak or resetting the transaxle fluid level after service thatinvolves a loss of fluid.
I made you up the procedure (in .pdf format) for checking the Fluid Level on this particular Transmission. You can download it by clicking HERE. I hope this helps you. If you have any more questions or need any more diagrams, please don't hesitate to ask...Thanks again, JShreader.
