Question about 1998 Chevrolet Tahoe

1 Answer

I have a 1998 GMC 1500 w/ the 5.7 vortec and have recently had issues with it not getting any spark. I had a mechanic replace plugs, wires, and distributor and it ran great for about three weeks and it just died again. It cranks over fine and the fuel pump is working but it just seems like there is no spark. I have put over 2000.00 into it and am stumped. The brain has even been replaced on it. Anybody have an answer?

You must be sure that you have near 60 pounds of fuel pressure.
You could also have a bad connection in the wirring harness going to ECM (brain) There is no way to be sure without see the truck. These are things to cosider though.

Check all your vacuum hoses especially at the PCV coming off the valve cover it is often over looked. The PCV fits loose either put a new bushing in the cover or add some black tape to the PCV at least until you figure out that might be the issue. Also your timing should be at TDC or 2 degrees plus or minus. Contrary to popular belief You can use a timing light you can see the timing mark know about where it is and line up the fly wheel mark accordingly.

1998 gmc 1500 p/u, 4.3 vortec. Will not start. No codes, good fuel pressure and spark

I assume it is cranking. So if you have gas and fire, we're down to timing, right? Or do you have security light on? Not sure what anti-theft system you have but some only shut off injectors. If no security light, you might have to pull the timing chain cover to check valve timing. Any questions or comments, please reply.

The 8 leaky fuel injectors might have been caused by a bad fuel return regulator. But, that put aside, the 4 plugs misfiring on one side can be caused by a bad computer or connections to the computer.

try replacing the plugs. if the spark is weak, the fuel may not burn correctly.
if the timing is off,it can do it too.
low octane will cause it as well as carbon build up.
i would put a fuel cleaner in the gas, change the fuel filter and the plugs and wires.

Spark plug wiring diagram

I dont understand why you would need that unless you took off all the wires and took out all the plugs and forgot how the wires were.I have the same truck and I always do the plugs and wires one at time to make sure I make a mistake. If this is your ploblem let me know because i might be able to walk you though it.
